DescriptionCaptain Sir Edward Berry of the Vanguard PU3438 (cropped).jpg
English: Captain Sir Edward Berry of the Vanguard. Technique includes etching. See PAD3437, published in March 1799, which is also based on Grimaldi but lacks the Nile medal (Berry having been Nelson's flag-captain there in 'Vanguard') and shows the sitter in the captain's undress uniform with a single (right) epaulette as appropriate to a captain of under three years' seniority. Grimaldi exhibited a miniature of Berry at the Royal Acdemy in 1799, but his own list of his works does not suggest he did more than one version at this time - and we do not know in which uniform - though he did another one of Berry in 1828. It is possible from the inscription, which states the 'portrait' as by Grimaldi and the rest by Roberts that the latter also includes the uniform and medal. See also MNT0126. [PvdM 12/10]
