Thereare connections to the surface every 9 ft. by which the currentis conducted to stud heads laid flush in the pavement. Thecable is supported in the conduit, as shown in the section, on acorrugated round insulator, whose shaft extends on one sidethrough the side of the conduit, and is there earthed to preventany leakage to the contact stud when the latter is supposed tobe dead. All longitudinal and vertical joints in the conduitare sealed with bitumen to prevent the entrance of any water.The stud is electrically connected with the cable, when the carpasses over it, by means of a plunger which is held by a springnormally away from the iron cable.
