What is the exact translation of voivodship?

My Langenscheidt's Polish-English dictionary says:
   województwo   n   province, voivodship
As far as I can see, voivodship is a perfectly acceptable English word within the context of discussing Poland, just as département is when discussing France, though adding "(province)" as a clarifier might be a good idea. On the other hand, shouldn't linking it be enough? Brion VIBBER
