[edit] Tour history

On 22 November 2011, Simple Minds announced an exclusive sixteen date European tour entitled "5X5 Live" to begin in Portugal on 14 February and to end in Ireland on 4 March 2012 (including four intimate United Kingdom venues on 24 and 25 February and on 2 and 3 March 2012) during which the band would perform for the first time five songs from each of their first five albums released from 1979 to 1982 representative of the post-punk period with the birth of the new wave electro scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Sarah Brown is not involved with this tour.[2]

In a February 2012 interview, Jim Kerr stated "we've got new management, a new agent, all of them younger, all of them into Simple Minds but... they prefer the earlier years!" This could be seen as one reason explaining such a backward tour![3]

In a video made the day after the band played Barrowland in Glasgow on 25 February 2012 and posted on 5 March 2012 in Simple Minds' website, Jim Kerr stated:

"... already there's talk of doing more 5X5 shows later on in the year [2012], but previous to that, we’ve got festival dates coming in – and a lot of great ones as well, a lot of, you know, festivals that we've, you know, fancied playing for a long time. And, of course, for us being Scots, the idea that’s been confirmed is that we'll be playing T In The Park – it already has everyone looking forward to that."

"I think with festivals, somehow, it’s a strange thing, you know, you almost have to turn up on the day and smell the atmosphere, you know, you almost have to sort of put your finger in the air and go “I sense this audience is up for this song or that song.” but I think songs like 'The American', 'Premonition', 'This Fear Of Gods', 'New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)', 'I Travel' would go down a storm at any festival. And if it looks like some of the bigger songs would be appreciated then we wouldn’t be adverse to that. But the funny thing is, going back to this 5X5 thing, it isn’t like “once it’s over, we’re going to drop that”, there’s songs now that’ve been reintroduced to us that I think demand to be played within any set that Simple Minds do. And that realisation has been such a bonus as well."[4][5]
