Atmail claims that its software powers over 15 million active user accounts worldwide [1].

[edit] Main features

The software serves three main functions:

Atmail Server - Leverages open source projects such as Courier-IMAP, Exim and MySQL on the backend to provide a comprehensive mailserver solution with management via the 'Webadmin' control panel.

Atmail WebMail - Utilizes Ajax and XUL technology to provide a Webmail interface intended to rival desktop clients.

Atmail Groupware - Provides a groupware server for users to share Calendar, Task and Contacts via Outlook clients and a web-based interface. A MAPI Sync Utility is available for Microsoft Outlook, allowing clients to sync address-book, calendar & task data from the AtMail server. 'Atmail Push' allows real-time synchronization of email accounts via handsets such as the iPhone and Windows Mobile enabled devices.

[edit] History

Originally developed in 1998, @Mail was one of the first commercial WebMail products available. The software is now more commonly referred to as Atmail instead of the original name '@Mail'. Initially developed in Perl, Atmail is now offered in PHP for ease-of-customization by a larger number of developers.

As of 19 May 2008 a free version of the Atmail webmail client was made available. Named AtMail Open, it is a lightweight, webmail-only version of the commercial application and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.

[edit] Technology

The Atmail WebMail interface uses Ajax to provide a browser-based user experience comparable to that of a desktop email client.
