Location of Équateur District in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Équateur District is a district located in the Équateur province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Équateur was to be combined with the city of Mbandaka to form one of 25 proposed provinces specified in the 2006 Constitution, to take effect no later than February 2009.[1] Mbandaka would be the capital of the new Équateur province.[2] As of October 2010, this had not taken place.[3]

The Équateur District was formerly a province known as Cuvette-Centrale, having separated from the former Équateur region in 1962. Léon Engulu served as the only president (later, governor) of Cuvette-Centrale from 1962-1966, when the province was reincorporated into the recreated Équateur province by the Mobutu regime.
