Ó Brolaigh, Gaelic-Irish surname.

Background[edit]

The several northern families of O Brolaigh originated in at least 4 locations in ancient Ireland and their Y-DNA reflects and confirms this. They were early located in Meath and were descendants of the clan of Uí Bhrolaigh who were erenaghs of Tech na Coimairce near Castlefinn, Donegal and Clonleigh, Donegal and Ulster. This branch were a sept of the Cenél nEógain, known as the Cenél mBinnigh, Eoghain's son, who descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages. This occurs in the fifth century

According to the [Annals of the Four Masters, in 1188 "Martain Ua Brolaigh aird-eccnaidh Gaoidheal & fer leighinn Arda Macha do écc/chief sage of all the Heidelberg, and chief lector of Ard-Macha, died."
