Ivan Lendl was the defending champion, and retained his title defeating Stefan Edberg 4–6, 7–6^(7–3), 5–2 in the final – leading in the third set when Edberg was forced to retire because of a torn stomach muscle injury. The Swede's retirement marked the first time since the 1911 Wimbledon Championships that a male player abandoned during the singles' title match of a Grand Slam tournament.
