Julia Görges was the defending champion, but she lost to Samantha Stosur in the second round.

For the first time since Wimbledon in 2009, all top four ranked players in the world reached the semifinals.

The World No. 2 Maria Sharapova won the tournament defeating World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka 6–1, 6–4 in the final, despite being a match point down in the second set of the quarterfinals against Stosur.
