Competitions[edit]

PDL[edit]

Main article: 2013 PDL season

The Portland Timbers U23 compete in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the United Soccer League's Premier Development League (USL PDL). The 2013 NW Division schedule is not a balanced home and away schedule as it includes three games (instead of two) against their biggest rivals, the Seattle Sounders FC U23, and also the Kitsap Pumas.

The USL PDL's 2013 rules will likely be similar to 2012. The rules are on the United Soccer Leagues website under "About" at the bottom of the home page, and then "Rules" on the right hand side bar.[1]

The USL PDL season culminates with an inter-division single elimination playoff tournament to determine each season’s national champion. The NW Division has varied in how they have structured playoffs. Last year, in 2012, the NW Division had a play-in round with the league winner playing fourth and second playing third for two inter-division playoff spots against the SW Division. In 2009 the second and third placed teams played for the second playoff spot while the league winner qualified directly. From 1997 to 2008 and 2010-2011 only the top two league finishers qualified for the playoff tournament. In 2013 the format matches that of 2009.[2]

Due to the smaller number of teams, only seven this year, the league moved away from the league principle (two games home and away against each team) to an unbalanced schedule with each team playing two other teams three times instead of twice. As such the league is less equitable, and with fewer playoff tournament play-in spots more emphasis is on league success. Each league game matters more than they did in 2012.

Preseason[edit]

Match results[edit]

Playoffs[edit]

Due to the large geographic area the USL PDL covers and the relatively modest financial means of most franchises/clubs, the league champion is determined in a single elimination knock-out tournament for which the top teams from each division qualify.

The Timbers U23 as the runner-up in the competitive NW Division had to compete in a play-in game versus the Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 to qualify for the round of sixteen. They squeaked by the Whitecaps via penalty kicks after the Whitecaps equalized late and overtime solved nothing. The Western Conference round of sixteen and quarterfinals were hosted by Ventura County Fusion. The Timbers U23 overcame the Fresno Fuego via the penalty kick tie-breaker in the round of sixteen after overtime. Luckily the other leg also went to extra time, so the Timbers U23 were not at a disadvantage for the quarterfinal game the next day. In the quarterfinal, the Victoria Highlanders topped NW Division compatriot Portland Timbers U23s 1-0 with an early goal to qualify for the semifinals.
