PDL[edit]

Main article: 2013 PDL season

The USL PDL's 2013 rules will likely be similar to 2012. The rules are on the United Soccer Leagues website under "About" at the bottom of the home page, and then "Rules" on the right hand side bar.[3]

The USL PDL season culminates with an inter-division single elimination playoff tournament to determine each season’s national champion. The NW Division has varied in how they have structured playoffs. Last year, in 2012, the NW Division had a play-in round with the league winner playing fourth and second playing third for two inter-division playoff spots against the SW Division. In 2009 the second and third placed teams played for the second playoff spot while the league winner qualified directly. From 1997 to 2008 and 2010-2011 only the top two league finishers qualified for the playoff tournament. In 2013 the format matches that of 2009.[4]

Due to the smaller number of teams, only seven this year, the league moved away from the league principle (two games home and away against each team) to an unbalanced schedule with each team playing two other teams three times instead of twice. As such the league is less equitable, and with fewer playoff tournament play-in spots more emphasis is on league success. Each league game matters more than they did in 2012.
