The discography of 30 Seconds to Mars, an American rock band, currently consists of three studio albums, three EPs, ten singles, four promotional single and ten music videos. 30 Seconds to Mars was formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, California, by chief songwriter Jared Leto (vocals, rhythm guitar) and his brother Shannon Leto (drums, percussion), with other members joining the band later.[1] In 1998, 30 Seconds to Mars signed with Immortal Records and Virgin Records, and after three years they released their debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars.[2] The album debuted at number 107 on the Billboard 200 and at number one on the Top Heatseekers.[3] The album produced two singles, "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)" and "Edge of the Earth", which reached the top ten on the UK Rock Chart.[4] The former also peaked at number 31 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and number one on the Heatseekers Songs. Over the years, the album has sold more than two million copies worldwide.[5]
The second album, A Beautiful Lie, was recorded on four different continents in five different countries over a three-year period.[6] The album expanded the group's audience, going platinum in the United States and Italy, and reaching gold status in several countries.[6] The album spawned four singles: "Attack", "The Kill", "From Yesterday", and "A Beautiful Lie". "Attack" was the number one most added track on alternative radio in its first week while "The Kill" set a record for the longest-running hit in the history of the Hot Modern Rock Tracks when it remained on the national airplay chart for more than 50 weeks, following its number three peak in 2006.[7][8] The third single, "From Yesterday", topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks for several weeks.[9] "A Beautiful Lie" was released as the album's fourth single in some territories, including Portugal, where it reached number eight on the chart.[10]
After a $30 million lawsuit by EMI concluded with a new contract, the band released their third album, This Is War, on December 4, 2009.[11] The album topped the American charts, peaking at number one on the Tastemaker Albums, number two on the Alternative Albums and Digital Albums, number four on the Rock Albums, and number 18 on the Billboard 200.[12] Its first two singles, "Kings and Queens" and "This Is War", peaked at number one on the Alternative Songs and reached number four on the Rock Songs.[13][14] The third single, "Closer to the Edge", holds the record for most weeks spent at the number one during 2010 on the UK Rock Chart when it remained at the top for eight consecutive weeks.[15] "Hurricane 2.0" was released as the album's fourth single in some territories, while "Night of the Hunter" is the current single in North America.
