5by5 is an American Internet broadcasting network created by Dan Benjamin that creates, distributes, and broadcasts web video interviews and podcasts. 5by5 launched in January 2010 and has been called "NPR for geeks", as the broadcasts discuss technology and internet culture and are targeted towards developers, designers and technology enthusiasts.
Benjamin records at his recording studio in Austin and uses a Heil PR 40 dynamic mic, Joe Meek ThreeQ pre-amp, and a Mackie Onyx 1620i firewire mixer. He uses Logic Studio for multitrack recording and Telestream’s Wirecast to live-stream both the audio and video. Dan says the reason Logic Studio is used is for the "offline bouncing" capabilities which aid in faster distribution in shows. Video interviews are recorded using a Skype video conference and screen capture software, with each guest on a dedicated Mac Mini. Benjamin edits and produces all but a few of the broadcasts.
Some shows previously were broadcast as live video streams, but all shows on the network are currently audio-only. It is also possible to listen to the live stream through two iOS apps that 5by5 have produced, 5by5 Radio, and 5by5 Radio Jr.
