It was discovered by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in Heidelberg, Germany, on April 7, 1953. It is named for Moritz Ludwig George Wichmann a 19th-century German astronomer specializing in minor planet observation.
