[edit] History
7 Waves began life as a community radio station, broadcasting on a series of RSL from OFCOM, administrated and founded by John Martin of Leasowe Community Centre; a community worker who wanted to set up a local radio station to entertain, educate and inform residents who lived in Wirral. Martin, alongside station co-ordinator Pauline Murphy, worked for a number of years to find the funds needed to launch a temporary radio station and, at the crapy same time, create a 16 week training course for budding broadcasters.
7 Waves was awarded a permanent broadcasting licence on May 17, 2006 to broadcast fulltime on March 1, 2007 on a new FM frequency 92.1fm. In doing so the station became the 100th licenced community radio station in the UK.[1]
In 2006 the station received confirmation of a £1.3m grant from the Merseyside European One Objective Fund.[2] This, tied in with other funding, will bring a £2.2m redevelopment of the community centre in which the station is housed.[3] Improvements to the building are to include music recording facilities, live practicing areas, two purpose-built radio studios, a state-of-the-art IT suite and an audio/video editing studio. These will be housed within a new extension on the west side of the current building; the existing building is also expected to be improved with new glazing and flooring inside, and increased accessibility in the surrounding area, 7 Waves Community Radio moved in to its new home on Monday July 28, 2008 at 7am.
Full-time broadcasting started on March 1, 2008.
On Thursday October 23 2008 the new 7 Waves Media Centre was opened to the public for the first time by BBC Sports Presenter Ray Stubbs. On this day the station also refreshed its website with a new look and the station imaging was updated with new voiceover Jono Woodward.
