8ta is a South African mobile telecommunications company. 8ta was launched in October 2010 and is owned by Telkom. 8ta phone numbers use the 0811 to 0819 dialling prefixes. 8ta's competition in South Africa includes MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Virgin Mobile.
The 8ta network provides voice and data products and services over a unified 2G / 3G network.
Recently, 8ta launched a promotional data package called Internet Promo 5 which is currently the cheapest wireless broadband offering in South Africa and is also cheaper than any fixed line broadband offering available in South Africa. The price of the promotion is R199 for 10 GB of data and the network supports theoretical speeds of up to a maximum of 21.1 Mbit/s currently.
