[edit] History

ABM, now a $4.2 billion corporation, began over a century ago.

[edit] The early years (1909–1944)

In 1909, Morris Rosenberg, the company's founder, invested $4.50 in cleaning tools and began cleaning San Francisco shopkeepers’ windows. Morris recovered his investment and made a profit of $3.50 on his first day, marking the beginning of the contract cleaning industry.

The Company took the name American Building Maintenance in 1913 and, in 1927, acquired Easterday Janitorial Supply Company.

ABM grew in the 1920s and 1930s on the West Coast, offering annual cleaning contracts to businesses, cleaning buildings economically and better than companies could clean their own facilities. In 1921, ABM became first janitorial contractor in America to clean a major college campus after contracting to clean Stanford University.

When Morris Rosenberg died in 1935, his oldest son Theodore “Ted” Rosenberg became President, with his younger son Sydney joining the company in 1937. Ted purchased an electrical company in 1937, and during World War II, ABM cleaned Navy ships and wired amphibious vehicles called “Water Buffalos.” By the end of the war, ABM had grown to 17 offices in the U.S. and Canada.

[edit] The post-war years and beyond (1945–1999)

They were listed in 1945 on the American Stock Exchange. In 1967, Ampco Auto Parks, which became Ampco System Parking in 1993, became the newest Division of the Company. In 1972 they were listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

ABM’s steady growth continued throughout the post-war years, and the company went public in 1962 with Ted serving as Chairman and Sydney as CEO. Ted remains involved with ABM to this day, serving on the Board of Directors, and the late Sydney Rosenberg retired as a director in December 1997. In the late 1960s, ABM further diversified services, acquiring the companies later known as Ampco System Parking, CommAir Mechanical, Amtech Elevator Services, and Amtech Lighting Services. In 1972, the New York Stock Exchange listed ABM (NYSE:ABM), with sales surpassing $100 million by the end of that decade. ABM Engineering was established in the early 1990s and received ISO 9002 certification in 1999. Also during this time, ABM formed a Facility Services division to streamline and coordinate multiple facility service needs for its customers. By the end of 1999, ABM employed over 55,000 people and enjoyed annual sales revenue over $1.6 billion.

[edit] Into the 21st century (2000–2009)

Under the leadership of Henrik Slipsager as President and Chief Executive Officer of ABM beginning in 2000, divestitures have been made, including selling Amtech Elevator in 2003 and CommAir Mechanical in 2005. Conversely, ABM has acquired several companies to bolster existing operations. In 2002 ABM acquired Lakeside Building Maintenance, and in 2004 acquired Security Services of America to strengthen security operations in the Midwest and the Southeast. In the East, ABM acquired four janitorial companies—Colin Service Systems in the Northeast, Initial Cleaning Services’ janitorial operations in Maryland, HGO in Philadelphia, and Brandywine Building Services in the Delaware, southeast Pennsylvania, and south New Jersey area.

On 8, 2007 October ABM Industries Incorporated announced the completion acquisition of OneSource Services Inc. (London AIM: OSS) for $365 million in cash[3]. OneSource provides outsourced facilities services, including janitorial, landscaping, general repair and maintenance and other specialized services, for more than 10,000 commercial, industrial, institutional and retail accounts in the U.S.

[edit] A new era (2010–present)

2010 saw the Company further expand its janitorial and security service offerings and built upon its existing industrial services client base with the acquisition of Diversco Integrated Services in June.

2010 provided ABM with an exciting, “game changing’" year as he Company and its CEO, Henrik Slipsager were featured in the second season of the CBS reality show Undercover Boss[4][5] and acquired The Linc Group, LLC ("TLG") for $300 million in cash[6]. Irvine, California-based TLG is a premier provider of end-to-end integrated facilities services that improve operating efficiencies, reduce energy consumption and lower overall operational costs of critical facilities, installations and buildings in the government, commercial, industrial and residential markets. TLG's 2009 revenues totaled $579.2 million.

ABM Industries Incorporated's wholly owned Ampco System Parking subsidiary acquired select parking assets from the L&R Group of Companies. Ampco acquired substantially all of the assets of three parking companies - Five Star Parking, Network Parking Company Ltd., and System Parking, Inc. - with significant parking operations throughout the United States, generating annual revenues of more than $160 million, employing approximately 2,500 people and servicing more than 450 key client accounts across the U.S.

ABM Janitorial Services, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of ABM Industries, acquired all of the outstanding shares of Diversco, Inc., from DHI HOLDINGS, Inc[7]. Founded in 1968 as a janitorial services company, Diversco employs 3000 people and is a national provider of outsourced facility solutions, with a strong manufacturing and industrial client base in the Southeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Diversco's services include a range of commercial cleaning and facility solutions, as well as security services primarily for manufacturing clients.

On April 5, 2010, ABM Industries mourned the loss of Ted Rosenberg, who served ABM's Board since 1962[8].

In 2011, the Company merged Linc Facility Services, LLC with ABM Engineering Services Company to create ABM Facility Services, Inc. Ampco System Parking was awarded a multi-year contract to manage parking operations at Missouri's Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL)[9]. Ranked as the 30th busiest airport in the U.S. by Airports Council International North America, Lambert-St. Louis International Airport served more than 12 million passengers in 2010. ABM Facility Services was awarded the contract to provide integrated facility solutions at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center[10].

On February 17, 2012 the company merged and consolidated previous acquisitions culminating in the launch of a new brand - ABM. Building Value – transforming it into one of North America’s largest integrated facility services provider.
