A Night to Remember is a 1955 non-fiction book by Walter Lord about the sinking of the ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic in 1912. The book was very successful, and is still considered a definitive resource about the R.M.S. Titanic. Lord interviewed many survivors of the disaster as well as reading their books/memoirs/articles. Lord authored a follow-up book, The Night Lives On, in 1986.
The film A Night to Remember, based on the book and with advice from Lord, was released in 1958.
[edit] Plot
Everyone is sure that the Titanic, owned by White Star Line, is completely unsinkable - the media, its passengers, and Captain Edward J. Smith - that is, until disaster strikes. A Night to Remember is the story of that fateful night (April 14, 1912) when the R. M. S. Titanic struck an iceberg, with the opening pages beginning just minutes before.
As a series of survivor account vignettes, the work has no reoccurring protagonist, rather moving from crew members (such as Second Officer Lightoller) to passengers in the First Class, Second Class, or steerage.
[edit] Some Important Characters
Frederick Fleet was on of the six lookouts of the Titanic. He first sighted and reported the iceberg.
Captain Edward J. Smith is the captain of the Titanic. He was over 59 years old, and was planning to retire after this voyage.
Second Officer Charles Lightoller was a reliable officer on the Titanic. After the ship sinks, he saves several lives and was the last survivor to board the Carpathia, the rescue ship.
John Jacob Astor was the richest member aboard the Titanic. He brought his Airedale aboard the ship. He did not survive the ship's sinking (neither did his dog).
Thomas Andrews was the builder of the Titanic.
First Operator John George Phillips and Second Operator Harold Bride were in charge of telegraphs. The latter of the two survived.
Bruce Ismay was the President of the White Star Line. He switched to the role of passenger sometimes, and he did this on April 15 to save himself.
