In aviation, above aerodrome alevation (AAE) denotes that an altitude is given above the nearest aerodrome or airport. This is usually identical to the altitude above ground level, but AAE is used to be precise. Also, in extremely hilly or mountainous areas, elevation AGL can change dramatically over small distances, and it is therefore prudent to use elevation AAE.
