Ace Ventura is an American comedy film series consisting of three entries, starring Jim Carrey as the titular character, Ace Ventura, a private investigator and self-proclaimed "pet detective." The first film, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, was released in 1994 after six years of development, with a sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, released in 1995. In 2009, a direct-to-video sequel, Ace Ventura, Jr.: Pet Detective, was released. An animated series was also produced and ran for three seasons.

The first two films were widely successful and have a cult following, though the third was released to mostly negative reviews.

Development[edit]

Bernstein had wanted to do a comedic version of Sherlock Holmes, and when watching the Stupid Pet Tricks segment on Late Night with David Letterman, got the idea for a pet detective.

Film series[edit]

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective[edit]

Ace Ventura is hired to rescue Snowflake, the bottlenose dolphin mascot of the Miami Dolphins. Despite his best efforts to save Dan Marino, he too is kidnapped. When Ace finds out a murder is connected, he soon begins to suspect Ray Finkle, a disgraced football player is behind this. However, he seemingly can't find him until Ace discovers that Finkle had been masquerading as Lt. Lois Einhorn in a transgendered disguise.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls[edit]

Ace is dispatched to Africa to rescue a white bat, battling severe chiroptophobia along the way.

Ace Ventura, Jr.: Pet Detective[edit]

Ace Ventura, Jr. (Josh Flitter) continues his father's pet detective business.
