Adult Swim also has a website and a mobile TV service which is run separately from its sister channel, Cartoon Network.

History[edit]

In the United States, Adult Swim fills the overnight broadcast time of the Cartoon Network cable channel, and features a mix of original and syndicated programming geared towards an 18+ audience.

In the UK, channels like the Cartoon Network are considered to be children's channels,[citation needed] and are prevented under the Ofcom broadcasting code from airing content unsuitable for children at any time of day,[citation needed] even after the traditional 21:00 watershed.

As a result, many of Adult Swim's original programmes have been aired in the UK on channels aimed at older audiences, often in designated "Adult Swim" branded blocks. In the past such blocks have aired on channels such as Bravo, FX and Syfy, before moving to TCM 2 in January 2012.

Shows previously screened as part of Adult Swim blocks on other channels include Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, Tom Goes to the Mayor, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Venture Bros., Moral Orel, and Metalocalypse.[1] Non-Williams Street shows[clarify] on the block include Stripperella and Kid Notorious. The first "action" series was the anime Afro Samurai, which aired on May 4, 2007, alongside a new UK animated show Modern Toss originally made for Channel 4. Adult Swim ceased to broadcast on Bravo on July 7, 2008.[2]

FX broadcast Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum, Venture Brothers and Metalocalypse, as part of an [adult swim] branded block, which ran between 5 June 2010 and 27 November 2010.

As of 4 January 2012, Adult Swim began a one-hour weekly broadcast on Turner's TCM 2 channel, marking the first time that Adult Swim has aired on one of Turner's own channels in the UK. The programming block ended in August 2013, following the closure of TCM 2. Most Adult Swim shows are now available online through their official UK YouTube channel Adult Swim UK - YouTube

Online & DVD[edit]

The UK Adult Swim website, like its American counterpart, offers free access to full episodes of shows including Squidbillies, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Tom Goes to the Mayor, Minoriteam, Stroker and Hoop, Moral Orel, 12 oz. Mouse, Perfect Hair Forever, Metalocalypse, and Frisky Dingo. As of Wednesday 11 July 2012, the Adult Swim UK site started redirecting visitors to the US site.

Revolver Entertainment recently began distributing some original Adult Swim series on DVD in the UK and Ireland.[3]
