Avianca Ecuador[1] (before AeroGal) is an airline based in Quito, Ecuador.[2] It operates passenger and cargo flights within Ecuador, between the mainland and the Galápagos Islands, and between Ecuador and Peru (on behalf of TACA) and Colombia. AeroGal merged with VIP Ecuador in 2012.

History[edit]

AeroGal was established in 1986.

Through a commercial agreement between AeroGal and Synergy Group (Avianca, OceanAir, VIP) the airline will receive new airplanes that will allow the start of new destinations. International destinations as Los Angeles, Milan, Madrid, Lima and Panama are being considered.

The agreement includes code sharing on national routes between AeroGal and VIP (Lago Agrio, Francisco de Orellana, Manta and Portoviejo).

Merger with Avianca and TACA[edit]

In October 2009, AeroGal announced its merger with the Colombian airline Avianca, and the Salvadoran airline TACA.[3] The airline is currently in a process to change its branding to Avianca.

Avianca currently owns the majority of the airline with more than 81% acquired, which forced Avianca to make a large investment of U.S. $ 7.2 million to strengthen and modernize the company. Despite the purchase by Avianca, AeroGal will continue using its separate identity and will continue to operate in Ecuador. In June 18, 2014 the airline has taken its new name Avianca Ecuador.
