In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the afanc (/ˈeɪfæŋk/ AY-fanc[1]) is a type of carnivorous sea creature.

Publication history[edit]

The afanc first appeared in the original first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[2]

The afanc (gawwar samakat) appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the Al-Qadim setting in the City of Delights boxed set (1993). The afanc and the young afanc appeared in Monstrous Compendium Annual Volume One (1994).[3]

Description[edit]

An afanc is a great amphibious fish with a whale-like body and a head like a fish. An afanc is able to swim rapidly around its prey in closing circles to cause a whirlpool, sinking ships and drowning air-breathing creatures.
