Historic populations [edit]

There is a small group of about 1000 Muslim black people in the region of Xanthi. Their origin is unsure, and probably they are descendants of slaves that were brought to Greece under the Ottoman Empire. [1]

Recent immigrants [edit]

African immigrants arrived in 1997 but most of them came during the 2000s. They employ themselves in the ‘third market’ sector by selling illegal copies of music and software cds and dvds of movies while few of them work in low intensive jobs in industry. Most of them come from Biafra, Nigeria and Senegal. Some of them also come from Congo, Zambia and Angola. The majority of them lives in Patissia and Kypseli area, in Athens.[2]
