[edit] Mechanics
Against the Darkness uses the 4-6-8 System, which assigns three different die types (d4, d6, and d8) to four attributes. The attributes all have Latin names: Corpus (Body), Mentus (Mind), Spiritus (Spirit), and Fidelis (Faith). The d4 is assigned to the weakest attribute. The d6 is assigned to two average attributes. The d8 is assigned to the most powerful attribute. Each attribute is further defined by a rating between 1 and 7. Each attribute governs a number of skills and miracles. A character may only use the miracles governed by the attribute which is assigned the d8. Skills and miracles are defined by a rating between 1 and 7. Extremely high levels can be created by assigning specializations to skills and miracles, up to a maximum of seven levels per skill or miracle.
Players resolve tasks by rolling a die and adding an attribute rating and an applicable skill or specialization score. They then compare the result to either a target number or opposed roll to determine success.
