Akhna (Greek: Άχνα Turkish: Duzce), is a village in Cyprus in the Famagusta District, just North of the United Nations Buffer Zone. After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the displaced residents built a new village south of the old location.
Turkish settlements are illegal under the municipal law of Cyprus.[2] Judge Loukēs G. Loukaidēs claims that such settlements are also illegal under international law and the Permanent Court of International Justice stated that repartition of Turkish settlers must take place to eliminate consequences of the "illegal act" of settlement.[2]
Akhna is well-known for its football club Ethnikos Achna FC, that won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006. In 2001 the number of inhabitants was 1,952.
[edit] History
Prior to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, it was an exclusively Greek Village, with the main industry supporting it being the growing of potatoes in red, iron rich soil which surrounded it. In 1974 some days after the official ceasefire it was occupied by Turkish troops and the inhabitants were displaced. The village was plundered as is currently uninhabited.
The inhabitants built a provisional village of tents in the Akhna forest (Dasaki tis Akhnas), some hundred meters away from their old village, and started later to build a new village, Dasaki Achnas, near the old location, within the confines of the Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area
