Alex Doonesbury is a fictional character in the comic strip Doonesbury. She is the daughter of Mike Doonesbury and J.J. Caucus.

From her early years Alex has shown herself to be highly intelligent, and an excellent student. She is brilliant at all things related to computers, and is an exceptional hacker. Her intelligence and eager nature often cause her to leap well ahead of reality, building grandiose plans off of extremely minor events (such as assuming that a student film she shot was bound for the Sundance Film Festival).

Although she gets along fairly well with her father, she harbors some resentment for her mother, whom she blames for the break up of her and Mike's marriage. This was made worse when Mike remarried to Kim Rosenthal, whom Alex adores, and J.J. remarried to "Uncle Stupidhead", whom Alex loathes. Alex has a good relationship with her grandmother Joanie as they have bonded over the strangeness of J.J.

Alex has some differences with her father as well, whom she considers a sellout for voting Republican (he was formerly a liberal) and for driving an SUV. She is politically very liberal and was a supporter of Howard Dean in the 2004 election. She also supports file sharing, another issue on which she and Mike clash.

Alex ran "Alex-Cam", a webcam show devoted entirely to herself. She had a fanbase of over 700,000, and even made money from product placement. She also ran Myvulture.com, the overstock selling website that Mike and Kim own.

After she graduated from high school, she was accepted into her father's alma mater, the fictional Walden College, along with Cornell[1], Georgetown, MIT, RIT, Rensselaer, and Harvard, among others. In an online poll, voters decided that she would attend MIT[2], although Alex pointed out that MIT "hacked the poll."

Alex has enrolled at MIT, but continues to call home at the slightest difficulty, such as a dorm dispute over one student's collection of mold. She's also started a Facebook account, where she met Leo, her current boyfriend.
