Is the most powerful vampire that serves the Hellsing Organization
Seras Victoria (セラス・ヴィクトリア Serasu Vikutoria?) is one of the main characters. In the anime, she acted as the point of view character for the audience. Seras is a Draculina, a term used to refer to the female members of the Dracula bloodline, since she has been turned into a vampire by Alucard. The term is not historically accurate since no female vampire turned by Dracula was ever referred to by this term in Stoker's book and may have been created specifically for Hellsing, but Seras is called this multiple times over the course of the story. A character similar to Seras was present in its prototype version, The Legends of Vampire Hunter, named Yuri Kate.
In the series, Seras was originally a police agent officer who, along with the rest of her squad, was sent into the village of Cheddar, where a vampire had taken control of the town and turned its inhabitants into "ghouls" (zombies controlled by vampires). She was taken hostage by that priest vampire. After shooting through her to kill the rogue vampire, Alucard offers to turn Seras into a vampire to save her from dying. She chooses vampirism, as with virgin blood she will become a vampire rather than a ghoul.
She is also a tomboy; a very brave, strong-willed and heroic young woman who often rejects following orders of her master that cross with her personal beliefs. However, she is a loyal and trustworthy soldier who will diligently follow the orders of her commander, provided said commander has proven his or her worth.
Seras's father, also a police officer, "got in too deep" during an undercover mission. The group he had infiltrated traced him back to his home and brutally murdered him. Her mother hid Seras in a closet and then walked out to face the criminals, who immediately killed her as well. A distraught Seras charged out and stabbed one of the criminals in the eye with a fork before being shot in the gut and thrown against a bloodstained wall. The flashback ends with Seras seeing glimpses of the criminals having sex with her mother's corpse. It was also shown that, after the ordeal in her orphanage, she threw a stone at another child for taking a toy she was playing with. Near the end of the flashback, Seras is told that she may be relocated if her violence continues, as the orphanage may not be able to care for her any longer. There, she expresses her strongest wish - to become a police officer.
Victoria's signature weapon is the Hellsing ARMS Anti-Midian Cannon 'Harkonnen'. Weighing 120 lb. (~60 kg) unloaded, this 30 mm, single-shot, break action, breech loader cannon uses various types of shells, including depleted uranium with silver for piercing armored targets and incendiary napalm rounds for destroying large groups of opponents both on land and in the air. Only a vampire could carry and use this weapon. Her immense strength also allows her to use the Harkonnen while moving; sometimes, especially in the manga, she wields it with an extraordinary ease, even firing over her shoulder. Before gaining the Harkonnen, Seras used a smaller rifle, firing 13.7 mm rounds, as is seen written on the gun in the OVA. In the manga this gun is unnamed but the letters BAERLKS are spelled out on its side; in the OVA, however, the gun has Harkonnen written in the same place.
Later on, for the purpose of defending Hellsing HQ, Seras used the Extra Long-Range Bombardment Firearm system for Localized defensive use "Harkonnen Cannon II". It had a gross weight of 345 kg and sported a pair of 30 mm auto cannons belt-fed from two large ammunition boxes carried on her back. Its maximum range was 4000m, and could snipe fast moving missiles and even shoot down Millennium airships. For additional firepower, the pair of cannons could double as a grenade launcher, launching two of the immense explosive incendiary grenades for wide-area field dominance "Vladimir", one from each barrel. Due to Seras's vampire strength, she could move around with the system with relative ease after she discarded the massive ammo boxes.
Although she loses her weapons during the confrontation with Zorin, relying instead on her "Shadow Arm", Seras makes use of firearms again during the confrontation with the Captain, using a pair of MG-42 Machine Guns salvaged from dead Millennium soldiers. In OVA X, she even used a Flak gun to destroy a bullet-proof glass wall that protected the Major.
Seras's weapons are named after the main antagonist of Frank Herbert's novel Dune, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. This is further reinforced by the appearance of the gun's "spirit" during dream sequences in the manga (and thus OVA) and episode previews in the anime; the spirit in question bears a strong resemblance to Baron Harkonnen from David Lynch's film adaptation of the novel.
TV series version
The TV series version changes numerous details of Seras' backstory, and changes her importance: while Alucard, Integra are the central characters of the manga, the anime focuses more on Seras' point of view, and her struggling to come to terms with her new life as a vampire. Her darker side, seen in the manga and the OVA series, is not present in the anime series (though a scene in episode 6 hints at it). However, it is notable that her hair is orange and her eyes become red as soon as Alucard makes her a vampire. She also starts drinking the medical blood after watching Alucard feed off Kim (the reporter from episodes 2 and 4), but no difference is seen in her appearance or behavior, other than her hair, eye, and suit color, which primarily yellow in the manga and OVA, but primarily blue in the TV series. The combat boots she wears are black in the manga, anime, OVA, and TV series. However, after she becomes a full vampire, her uniform turns red with matching red, shredded stockings, red boots, and white gloves and red eyes and gingery-blonde hair.
Her affiliation with the English police is also different. In the manga, Seras is a solitary constable assigned to Cheddar, but in the OVA, Seras was partnered with two male officers, Simon and Eddie. Both men were turned into ghouls by the priest vampire.
The TV series, however, has Seras placed in Division 11, the precursor to SO19 team sent to Cheddar to combat the vampire. Seras' D-11 teammates often watched out for her, affectionately referring to her as "Kitten". Sadly, Seras' entire D-11 team was turned into ghouls, either by the priest vampire or the other ghouls roaming Cheddar. In the manga and OVA, Seras confronted the priest vampire outside, while in the TV series Seras confronted him inside the village church.
Owing to the vastly different TV series continuity after episode 7, the interaction with Pip Bernadotte is not present. Instead, Seras must struggle with the temptation to drink Alucard's blood, thus fully realizing her vampiric powers, something she does in the final episode of the anime. She drinks his blood, but does not show the power increase that she showed in the manga/ova. It could be however, be due to Alucard being dead at the time she drank the blood. Incognito even states that "Even if you drank every last drop of your master off the tower, you will never become a true Nosferatu. You're running out of blood, and soon you will run out. You're already dead, there's nothing for you to be afraid of any more."
Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing (インテグラル・ファルブルケ・ウィンゲーツ・ヘルシング Integuraru Faruburuke Wingētsu Herushingu?), more commonly, Integra Hellsing, is a prototype which lead to the development of her existing character appears as a Nazi in one of Kouta Hirano's earlier works, HIANDLOW.
She is a 22-year-old noblewoman member of the Protestant Knights who is the head and last member of the Hellsing family, the Bureau Director of the Hellsing Organization, and the current master of Hellsing's vampire, Alucard. Integra is usually a collected individual, rarely allowing her emotions to get in the way of business. However, she is sometimes prone to fits of anger. The Hellsing family is "on a mission from God", and she values her duties to protect the United Kingdom and the Anglican Church above everything else. For her, failure is not tolerated, especially her own. She runs the Hellsing Organization with charisma and patriotism, and she is one of the few people who can stand up to the force of Alucard's personality and command his respect.Even as a child she had developed a deep sense of duty to Hellsing, not standing for anything that may threaten her or her organization. Being the first matriarch (female leader) of Hellsing, it is evident that she struggles to maintain respect from members of the queen's government known as 'The Round Table'.' Often they question her judgment, even on one occasion scolding her, telling her the loss of her men ( ) was her fault, and that it was therefor her responsibility to lay these men to rest. In this moment Integra shows a great act of responsibility, correcting her servants when they speak to defend her, taking full responsibility and with an absolute reserve in emotion and a very solemn expression, shoots each of her men who had been turned into ghouls as an act of mercy and humility. After this she and the round house seem to have better relation, especially with one member that it is later found, her father had contact with. They  seem to realize she is more than capable towards the end of the series when she proves herself to be multiple times.The first time you see real emotion in her is as a young child in the first episode of the ova  along with another time near, both times are reserved but you witness slight changes and a building of tears. This aspect gives Integra a very human but respectable quality, a very strong heroine indeed. Her bond that is made with Alucard is depicted differently in the TV series  than from the OVA, being that Alucard's reaction differs slightly. Later in  Dawn you get to see more into her father before his death and what leads up to the events in the OVA.
Walter C. Dornez
Walter C. Donnelly Dornez (ウォルター・C（クム）・ドルネーズ Worutā C. (kumu) Dorunēzu?) is a fictional character in the Hellsing anime and manga series created by Kouta Hirano. Walter is a member of an organization called Millennium. He previously served as a member of the Hellsing Organization, and also as the retainer of the Hellsing family.
As a Hellsing operative
He was born in either late 1929 or 1930 with unknown birthplace. Walter has lived with the Hellsing family for perhaps his entire life. It is known that Walter was educated at Balliol College, Oxford (where Arthur Hellsing and Sir Hugh Irons were educated) after World War II, and read philosophy and politics. Hellsing: The Dawn records Walter and Alucard (in the body of a little girl) storming Millennium's base during World War II in Warsaw, Poland, and putting an end to their first attempt at creating an army of artificial vampires.
In modern times, Walter serves primarily as Integra's butler and also makes special weapons for use by Hellsing's vampires, Alucard and Seras Victoria. However, he is still one of the organization's most capable operatives, wielding high-velocity monomolecular wires with incredible skill and precision. Walter's efficiency and power was so great that he earned the nickname the "Angel of Death," and even at the age of 69, Walter can still rip his way through hordes of the undead. In the manga, he also helps Integra make numerous difficult choices that Alucard occasionally poses, such as whether or not to kill innocent humans in order to achieve mission objectives.
His overall attitude during his pre-vampiric time seemed to be one of proud resignation to the fact that he was becoming old, and was not as effective a fighter as he once had been. When Alucard tells him how growing old must be terrible, Walter tells him that "If we cannot have our pride with prosperity, then we should reject such prosperity", enforcing the position that Walter is proud of being human, and would not embrace the prosperity of vampiric immortality because it would mean sacrificing that pride. Ultimately however, it seems that his fear of becoming useless overcame his sense of pride, as his ultimate wish is to become "a shinigami [God of Death] in body, mind and soul". To this end, he attempts to destroy Alucard in order to prove his capabilities to himself.
As Millennium's secret weapon
In the latest developments of the main Hellsing storyline, Walter is captured by The Captain of the Millennium Organization during their invasion of England. He has gone through a similar process to the Major and the Doc's troops (although hastily conducted, according to the Doc), and now appears forty or so years younger, serving as Millennium's new secret weapon (when the Major sees the finished product, he remarks "It was determined 55 years ago that you would join us"). Walter himself does not add many more details, in Volume 9 of Hellsing, Walter has leaped from his perch on one of Alucard's stakes to confront him, crushing what was left of Alexander Anderson underfoot, saying that people become trash once they are dead and that trash should not be mourned for. He then tells everyone he was brainwashed and rejuvenated. When Seras intervenes, Walter asks if she would like more the explanation and states that he is fighting of his own free will against Alucard. Enraged by his desecration of Father Anderson's remains, Yumie attacks him, but is easily outmatched and cut into pieces in a single move. After listening as Walter explains himself, Alucard criticizes his decision, saying that his old, aged body was many times more beautiful than his new, unnaturally youthful one. He also makes ironic use of the statement "If we cannot have our prosperity with pride then we should reject such prosperity". This comment was made by Walter, but referenced by Alucard to mock Walter's hypocrisy regarding his fear of becoming old and useless. Also, during Walter's brief fight with the Captain, the Major's dialogue seems to imply his previous remark meant he had made the choice to forcefully draft Walter into Millennium ever since witnessing his feats of power during WWII.
Powers and abilities
Although a human for the majority of his life, Walter possessed tremendous combat skill on par with or exceeding many supernatural beings. During the initial Millennium assault on Hellsing, he dispatched a large force of ghouls with ease and confidently engaged an artificial vampire. Also, during the first attempted Millennium takeover of Sir Penwood's military coupound, he managed to defeat an entire unit of artificial vampires armed with automatic weapons without taking a single step. As a 14 year old boy, he managed to hold his own against the Captain for a good portion of their fight. His headbutt to the Captain's face actually injured the werewolf, and he was even quick enough to wrap his wires around the Captain's neck (though neither attack had any lasting effect). Particularly, he was able to withstand punches from the Captain, even though an impact resulting from Seras and the Captain punching each other's fists at the same time blew off both their arms. This opens the possibility that Walter had some physical enhancement as a human; a punch to the head or gut from the Captain would have killed any normal human and probably most vampires, yet Walter withstood both one after the other (it's also possible that this is just the result of poor writing). Alternately, it is possible that the Captain's later enhancements were much improved over those from 1944 (however, judging from the fact that Walter's wires had exactly the same effect on him in 1944 as they did in 1999, this is rather unlikely).
His speed and agility are of particular note, and even in his old age he was able to dodge bullets from assault rifles. In his youth, Walter displayed great acrobatic skill and even as a senior citizen he still can perform exceptional feats of balance and coordination. His strength is also considerable, when the transformed Walter first appears in the manga, his micro-filaments wrap around several buildings and slice them in half, with no evidence of any physical strain on Walter's part.
Walter's primary weapons are a set of very long microfilament razor wires, which he controls as if they were extensions of his own body. The wires are sharp enough to slice through steel and concrete with no trouble though he can use them to bind and restrain targets without damaging them. Also, he can create extensive movements of the wires with very little bodily movement; a simple hand gesture can enable him to cut down scores of foes. When turned into an artificial vampire by Millennium, all of his abilities were restored to their full extent and augmented far beyond it. In his final battle with Alucard, he demonstrated previously unseen abilities with his wires, including stopping a high fall (slicing several buildings in half in the process), forming mesh shields to block bullets, and binding targets and controlling them as puppets.
Formidable as his new form was, the rushed and flawed transformation procedure rendered his body highly unstable. This manifested by his growing increasingly younger until he resembled his fourteen year-old self. At this point, he could no longer withstand bodily harm, and later his right arm crumbled apart. In his final moments before dying, he reverted to his original, aged body.
Walter's middle initial, C., is pronounced in full in the OVA series as "クム" (kumu). "クム" also accompanies the "C" as furigana in chapter 74, Relics. This is the Japanese transliteration of the Latin word "cum", which means "with". There is much disagreement over the romanization of his surname, with the most common variants being Dorne, Dornez, Dornes, Dolnez, and Dollneaz. This is confused even more by the addition of a second "d" in some variants of his name (i.e. Ddollneaz), as on the back cover of the original Japanese version of manga vol.4 Walter's name is written: "Walter Cumm Ddollneazz." The American manga release by Dark Horse reveals his name as "Walter C. Dornez" in Volume 2.
He is best noted for his eye-patch (between his first appearance and the expedition to Brazil, Pip did not have an eyepatch, but instead had his left eye bandaged, though this is not reflected in the OVA), his braid and an Australian slouch hat with the left side flap folded up with the Wild Geese emblem, a Pegasus, on it. He is also often seen in combat with an AK-74 as his weapon of choice. He is hired by Walter at the end of Volume 2 to replace all the soldiers killed by the Valentine Brothers. On his first debriefing, he openly insults and antagonises Seras Victoria over the absurdity of vampires but is quickly put in his place by Seras' 'aggressive reasoning', involving nearly breaking his skull by flicking him with her fore-finger. Pip is also a compulsive smoker, and is shown with a cigarette in his mouth more often than not.
The name of his group (The Wild Geese) is believed to be derived from a movie during the seventies that shared the name and was about a group of mercenaries in Africa. This is incorrect, and is a reference instead to The Wild Geese, the Irish who left Ireland following the Treaty of Limerick. Pip being French (or possibly Belgian, as he wears the Belgian flag on his coat), it's possibly an homage, since it was the Wild Geese serving France who finally broke the back of the British army at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, (according to some accounts taking the colors of Britain's Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards). His family has also served in the wild geese for 6 generations and it's unknown what was their rank in the group before they died or retired. (Which would place their entry after the dissolution of the 'official' French Irish units. However, many organizations of predominately Irish mercenaries are known to refer to themselves as the 'Wild Geese', particularly those dating back to the 18th and 19th century.)
There used to be some debate over his name and ethnicity. The Dark Horse version states that his name is Bernadette when he was introduced in volume 2 but Vernedead in volumes 6 and 7. This was an intentional corruption of Bernadotte by Hirano (VerneDEAD). He also rants and curses in various languages and uses different accents. It was initially thought that he was either of a British, French, Australian or American background. However, Hirano confirms him to be French in the back of volume 6's tankoubon, where it is stated that he is "French and loves boobs". Hirano also mentioned in a recent filler-chapter that he was of Swedish ancestry. The English dub of the OVA pronounces it as Bernadette but lists it as Bernadotte.
The Royal House of Bernadotte is the current royal house of Swedish, founded by one of Napoleon's marshals: Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. One can assume that Pip was a Frenchman with Swedish connections, or vice-versa. An interesting fact is that the current Crown Princess of Sweden is named Victoria of Bernadotte.
His first name, "Pip" is never actually used in any of the dialog in either the Manga or the OVA series, and he is always referred to as either "Bernadotte" or "Captain Bernadotte". "Pip" initially came from his prototype character from Coyote, and only appeared in Hellsing scrawled in English next to occasional pictures of Pip. The name wasn't declared official canon to Hellsing until the Japanese OVA III DVD was released. The Limited Edition version of that volume included a character profile for Pip that lists his name in Japanese and English as "Pip Bernadotte"
Initially portrayed as an experienced mercenary but is narrow-minded. After an attack on the mansion, Pip and his men are losing the fight. Seras tries to save them, but gets herself in mortal danger and ends up blinded and crippled by Millennium Lieutenant Zorin Blitz. Pip, already severely injured, tries to rescue her but is killed when Zorin impales him. Before his death he kisses her for the first time, after she had rejected him once earlier, and tells her to suck his blood and become stronger. Seras sucks his blood after he dies, and gains everything he is: his soul, body, memories and experiences, turning him into a familiar-like being in order to fight their enemies "together" from now on. Seras also becomes a true vampire at this point, (since she had previously refused to drink blood), and begins for the first time to show abilities similar to Alucard's.
As a familiar, Pip makes his first appearance in chapter 85 - Warcraft (3), giving Seras tactical advice. In chapter 86, Pip explains to Seras about the origin of the spoils of war present in the room before guiding her to fight the Captain. At the very end of the chapter, he manifests out her body and stabs the werewolf's chest with a tooth that has a silver filing, killing Captain for messing around "another man's woman."
Although having no supernatural powers when he was alive, Pip Bernadotte did have experience from warfare and skills with firearms and military tactics, as well as incredibly high endurance or pain tolerance. After being absorbed by Seras, she is able to shapeshift his body from solid shadows into his normal body form. He seems to possess a superhuman strength for being able to punch through the chest of the Captain after he was immobilized when Seras had destroyed both his arms. In the epilogue of the published volume 10 talking, shapeless shadows that "wrap around the entire headquarters" are noticed by Iscariot members, and even though he makes no actual appearance, Pip's voice can be heard (his voice in the OVA and his style of speaking in them manga)
Alexander Anderson (アレクサンド・アンデルセン Arekusando Anderusen?) is a character from the manga/anime Hellsing, acting as an antagonist to his nemesis, the protagonist Alucard. He is a warrior priest or paladin monster slayer and purifier who works for the Iscariot Organization. He has a Scottish accent in the English adaptations of the manga and anime series, but canonically his nationality is unknown; he lives in Italy, where he operates an orphanage. Anderson, like many of Kouta Hirano's characters, was recycled from one of Hirano's old hentai works called Angel Dust, where he is involved in a few action sequences and is depicted with black hair, as well as using assault rifles rather than his bayonets.
Alexander Anderson has short, spikey blond hair (grey in the manga), brown/tanned skin, green eyes (blue in the manga), a heavy-set squared jaw, and constant stubble. He also has a large, wedge-shaped scar on his left cheek. In the first televised anime series, he was depicted with prominent, sharp canines, possibly to heighten his resemblance to a vampire and make him a symbolic counterpart to Alucard, the "tame monster" of the Hellsing Organization. Anderson is quite an imposing man, being very tall (slightly taller than Alucard, who himself is over 2 meters in height) and lean with broad shoulders. He wears round glasses, a large grey cassock (has purple trim in the TV series and white trim with blue interior in the OVA), grey pants (black in the OVA and white in the TV series), black boots, a black shirt (black with blue trim in the OVA and white in the TV series), a clerical collar (absent from both of the anime series), white gloves, and a silver cross (which often glows gold in the OVA) around his neck. On his gloves, there are inscriptions written across the crosses drawn on the back:
- For the right hand, Jesus Christ is in Heaven
- For the left hand, Speak with Dead (later changed to Speak with the Dead)
In the manga, these inscriptions change sometimes, in Anderson's later appearances his gloves read Iscariot Section XIII, the organization to which Anderson belongs. The character Father Barre portrayed by Michael Gothard, an exorcist and wild instigator depicted in Ken Russell's The Devils (film) (1971) (a dramatisation of Urbain Grandier), has been sighted as a possible inspiration for Father Anderson.
Alexander Anderson normally appears as a calm and collected priest; he works at an orphanage in the manga and OVA and acts very kindly towards the children under his care. During battles, however, he reveals a darker side. Anderson carries an obsession for what appears to be his "crusade," and compulsively quotes passages of the Holy Bible as he speaks. He is extremely determined to achieve his end, however he abhors the methods chosen by Maxwell to put it in motion. In battle, he is merciless and almost unstoppable due to his abilities. He has a habit of hissing during fights, and often loses all control of himself much like Alucard. Despite this, he can stop himself and focus on his mission. He has a measure of self-restraint when innocents are caught in the middle (like tourists) or when someone has caught his admiration (as Integra did).
Alexander Anderson is an ardent Catholic. His words and his constant quoting of scripture indicate a clear, almost fanatical obedience towards "the word of God". His behavior in the first volume was depicted as an intense Catholic priest, who went as far as calling Integra "Babylon", as a reference to Whore of Babylon, and displayed an immense hatred for Protestants (like Integra). In the first episode of Hellsing Ultimate, some of Anderson's statements heavily imply a fanatical hatred for all non-Catholics. Anderson tells a pair of young boys that they should only engage in violence against "monsters and non-believers," and comments to his superiors that it is fortunate that a large vampire population must be killing many English Protestants. Anderson resents the control of England over Northern Ireland, which he believes is Catholic territory, and states that it is his mission to kill unbelievers.
In the TV series, Order 3: Sword Dancer, Paladin Alexander Anderson's actions are vaguely relativist. He ignores his true mission, and instead focuses on the basic requirements of his crusade; thus, attacking Seras Victoria, Alucard and killing Captain Gareth of the Hellsing Organization, though Gareth was a human being and attempting to exterminate the same target as Alexander Anderson. While his orders from Iscariot specified the extermination of a single rogue vampire, he engages in combat with Alucard as well.
In the manga (and by extenstion, the OVA, which is closer to the manga than the TV series), however, his character is much more complex. He shows a greater sense of morality both in his treatment of the orphans under his care and his eventual assistance to Integra and betrayal of Enrico Maxwell (who becomes drunk with power and starts killing innocent humans), quite unlike the TV series Anderson who is portrayed as little more than a mindless, psychotic killer. His complexity in the manga is later demonstrated by his respect for Integra's conviction and for Seras's bravery. Specifically, he agrees to escort Integra to Hellsing HQ, because it would be impolite to leave a lady to walk there alone. Anderson tells the members of Iscariot to retreat from battle when Alucard releases his familiars, wanting them to live on and protect the Catholic religion; as he believed there already enough souls in limbo. He also appears to have a form of respect for Alucard, shouting "The black peril comes!" while laughing as Alucard enters the Thames at the end of Volume 7. In his final moments, Anderson consoled his grieving rival in his own way, telling him that monsters do not cry. In the TV series, Alucard refers to Anderson as a "dog of the Church" and is neither human nor monster (and is therefore incapable of killing him, only a human can do that). In the manga and OVA, however, Alucard shows great respect for Anderson and goes so far as to compare him to the men who were able to defeat Dracula (Integra's grandfather, Abraham Van Helsing and the other men from Bram Stoker's Dracula), stating that although they were mere humans they possessed the will to destroy a monster such as Alucard. This changes, however, when Anderson chooses to use the Nail of Helena on himself in order to become a monster on an equal level to Alucard. At this point Alucard rules that Anderson, having sacrficed all of his humanity in exchange for power, is no longer worthy of destroying him and that Anderson must be killed. Alucard had previously stated that he would be proud to die in battle against Anderson, but clearly Anderson forfeited that right by turning himself into a monster rather than a (regenerating) human.
In battle, Alexander Anderson is often depicted using scores of blessed bayonets presumably made of silver as well as smaller blades which are held between his fingers like claws. He is shown to have extraordinary physical abilities, including strength, speed, and stamina. He is shown using pages from bibles as barriers to ward off vampire movement, and also appears to be able to teleport himself amongst clouds of bible pages. Anderson is a "Regenerator", meaning he utilizes Iscariot-developed technology that allows him to restore body parts that are lost and heal himself (this ability does not work in his battle with Alucard in OVA part 8, due to Alucard firing Jackal on him - a weapon especially designed to be used against "Regenerators").
The early history of Alexander Anderson is largely unknown, such as when he joined Iscariot or what his childhood life was like. Supposedly his history is revealed in the manga Angel Dust, however, given that Hirano has not made any definite links to his past works this is uncertain. He first appears in Hellsing volume 1, when he is convinced by Father Renaldo to travel to Northern Ireland to deal with Alucard and Seras Victoria who are hunting a vampire. Believing that Northern Ireland is Catholic land and Protestant England has no jurisdiction there, Anderson agrees and travels there. He confronts Alucard, cutting off his head and chasing Seras through the building they are in. He catches up to Seras and is stopped by Integra just as he is about to kill her. Anderson states that he will not back down against a "Protestant whore" and swiftly kills Integra's bodyguards. Before he can kill Integra herself, Alucard regenerates himself and engages Anderson. Anderson retreats when he realizes he can't defeat Alucard with his current weapons and teleports away, shouting: "We'll meet again, Hellsing! Next time, I'll butcher you all". Anderson also appears in Crossfire.
Anderson appears in volume 2 with Enrico Maxwell, the head of Iscariot to discuss with Integra about the instigator of the attack on the Hellsing manor led by Luke and Jan Valentine. Alucard appears after Maxwell insults Integra, and Maxwell responds by calling Anderson into play. Before they can start another duel, Alucard and Anderson are interrupted by Seras leading a group of elderly Japanese tourists (possibly because of some agreement with Walter that Alucard would not destroy the museum, since the two smiled at each other after everyone had gone). The two decide to postpone their fight. Anderson proceeds to leave, commenting on the quality of the museum and asking Maxwell if next time he could bring some of the orphans to visit. In an almost humorously agitated manner, he then swears that he will rip Alucard to pieces the next time they meet.
In volume 3, Anderson is briefly seen watching the fight between Tubalcain Alhambra and Alucard on television. In volume 4, Anderson is sent to deliver a message to Alucard and Seras to return to London and report on the Millennium Organization, a task which he fails to accomplish without first getting into a brief scuffle (specifically, a fistfight) with Alucard. Afterward, he engages in battle with some paramilitaries (possibly from a Neo-Nazi group) sympathetic to the Millennium cause.
In volume 6, after The Major declares war against England, Anderson brings the rest of Iscariot with him to England and saves Integra from a group of Nazi vampires. When Heinkel Wolfe attempts to apprehend her, Integra disagrees and asks Anderson if this is permissible, to which Anderson says it is not. He instructs Iscariot to follow Integra's instruction by escorting her back to the Hellsing manor.
Later, in volume 7, Maxwell arrives in England with the remnants of the armies used in the Holy Crusades and takes the opportunity to kill all English "heretics". Seeing this, Anderson believes Enrico has quit serving God and now only serves his own power. When Heinkel informs Anderson of Iscariot's new orders to take Integra prisoner, Anderson expresses his displeasure. Before he can act against the rest of Iscariot, Seras arrives with her new powers awakened and does it for him. Anderson acknowledges her newfound power, telling Heinkel that Seras was not something the ordinary members of Iscariot could hope to fight any longer.
In Volume 8, Anderson engages in what he considers the final confrontation with Alucard. He is wounded severely by Alucard's Jackal, a weapon unfamiliar to Anderson. Trapped in a mesh of undead, Anderson is saved by the remnants of Section XIII. Anderson then reveals the weapon that Vatican Section III Matthew had provided him with: Helena's Nail. Alucard begs Anderson not to become a monster like himself. Anderson ignores this warning, impaling himself with the nail and transforming. Anderson is transformed into a kind of thorn like monster version of himself, still appearing as human but any time that he is injured, his body is revealed to actually be a living mesh of thorns and vines held together and self-regenerating. They battle, with Anderson-monster nearly destroying Alucard, before Seras intervenes. Although it could be that Alucard actually allowed Anderson-monster to attack due to being in deep shock himself - as he had hoped Anderson to be a worthy human opponent for "releasing" the vampire from his eternal "dream". This version is supported due to Alucard's response to Seras' cry - "Quit screaming, police-girl. I perfectly hear your voice." followed by immediate and effortless victory over Anderson-monster in Volume 9, where after healing, Alucard psychically dissolves the thorns surrounding him and by the same token shatters Anderson's blade. Alucard then charges Anderson and, plunging his hand into Anderson's chest, removes the nail along with Anderson's heart. This destroys most of Anderson's body in the process. As Anderson dies, he and Alucard exchange words as what remains of him decays and turns to ash.
Enrico Maxwell (エンリコ・マクスウェル Enriko Makusuweru?) is the fanatical leader of the Vatican's Special Section XIII, the Iscariot Organization. Enrico controls his organization with an iron fist. However, his seemingly blind devotion to his mission often makes his underling Alexander Anderson question his motivations. During the standoff between Alucard and the Millennium led police force in Rio de Janeiro, Anderson watches the scene unfold on the news with a sense of indignation and fury, while Enrico seems to revel in the ensuing violence. Enrico also has a bitter rivalry with Integra Hellsing, Bureau Director of the Hellsing Organization, due to their similar occupations and differing ideologies. Enrico seems to suffer from a facial tic characterized by repeated wincing of his left eye, much to the amusement of fans. He also appears to drool whilst he sleeps.
In the manga, Enrico is promoted to the rank of bishop, and then very quickly to archbishop in the space of two volumes by the Pope. He is given command of the remnants of the Christian armies from the Holy Crusades, which consists of over 3,000 knights clad in medieval armor and wielding an assortment of heavy weapons with which to attack Millennium. However, he became so drunk with power that he decided London's Protestant survivors also deserved to die, and commanded his men to kill them as well. Eventually, Alucard's undead army overran his own. Enrico's helicopter was shot down by Rip Van Winkle (who at this point was a familiar under the command of Alucard), but it was Anderson who broke the armored glass protecting him, leaving Enrico to be impaled by Alucard's men. Anderson commented that Enrico had become drunk with power and rather fought for his own goals and pleasure rather than for the sake of the Vatican. With this act, Anderson felt that Enrico had become an enemy of the Vatican and needed to be killed. After Enrico's death, Anderson has a flashback. As a small child, Enrico lived at Ferdinand Luke's, an orphanage outside Rome where Anderson lived and worked. His parents had abandoned him, likely because he was the 'son of a mistress'. Though Anderson tried to raise him as well as he could, Enrico remained angry and spiteful. He grew determined to become someone that people couldn't look down on. Enrico's determination proved to be his hamartia, as he ended up dying the same way that he had lived; alone. He even appeared in Crossfire but in a different appearance. In Volume 10 we see his carf where he was promted to archbishop as his shrine and the others with items as their shrine
In the manga, Maxwell has blonde hair and blue eyes, while both animated versions give him silver hair. He has green eyes in the TV series and violet eyes in the OVA series.
Heinkel Wolfe and Yumie Takagi
Heinkel Wolfe and Yumie Takagi are prominently featured in the manga series Crossfire. Heinkel made two short cameos in Hellsing OVA 4 and Yumie first appears in Hellsing OVA 5 along with a full and speaking appearance by Heinkel.
Heinkel Wolfe (ハインケル・ウーフー Hainkeru Ūfū?)
Debut: Hellsing Volume 4
Heinkel is a pistol wielding German assassin for the Iscariot organization, partners with Yumie, and is a priest.
She acts as a bodyguard for Enrico Maxwell in Hellsing volumes 4 to 5 and is later seen, along with Yumie, among the brigade of Catholic priests sent to apprehend Integra under Father Anderson's leadership in volume 6. In Chapter 74, she is shot in the face by The Captain. The bullet entered through her left cheek, exited through the right, and severely damaged the right side of her face. Heinkel is bewildered as the Captain gestures to her with his head, which she interprets as 'stay out of the way'. He tosses her a first-aid kit, and Heinkel realizes that the Captain spared her life when he could have easily killed her. After seeing Yumie's remains, a bandaged and enraged Heinkel swears revenge on Walter, and takes a Dragunov SVD sniper rifle from the small group of remaining Iscariot priests. While Walter is distracted by Alucard's remains, Heinkel shoots him through the chest with her sniper rifle.
Heinkel makes a couple of small non-speaking appearances in Hellsing OVA 4, shooting a corrupt priest under Maxwell's order and later aiming her pistols at Schrödinger when he unexpectedly materializes at the Hellsing-Vatican meeting with the Queen of England. Heinkel makes her full appearance in OVA 5 and again in OVA 8, also in a drama CD version of Crossfire between OVA 6 and 7.
Recent remarks made by Hirano in a December 2005 issue of "Puff" magazine, in which he was interviewed about the upcoming Hellsing OVA series and Hellsing in general, have shed new insight into Heinkel and his curiously androgynous appearance. It seems he is "neither male nor female"; possibly intersexual, though given Hirano's frequent ironic remarks, the validity of this statement is disputed. Note that the obviously female Heinkel Wolfe in Crossfire is a completely different character, and the two shouldn't be confused with each other so it is more likely a prototype manga like the others (though in one of the chapter covers Maxwell expresses surprise to see that she was a woman). Although the voice of Heinkel is played by Mitsuki Saiga in Hellsing OVA 5, there is still curiosity among fans towards Heinkel's sex due to the suspiciously masculine tone in Saiga's voice for this role.
In the final chapter, Heinkel seems to have become a regenerator, replacing Anderson as Iscariot's trump card. Coincidentally, she develops a feud with Seras Victoria, much like their mentors Alucard and Anderson. She still has the wound inflicted by the Captain (much like Anderson's scar) and has not aged over 40 years, implying she has become a regenerator like Anderson. It is unknown if she still wields pistols or bayonets like Anderson. It's revealed that as of now they are too weak after the 9th Crusade, and that the next crusade will have to take at least some centuries, which enrages Heinkel as she wanted to be part of taking down Hellsing, despite knowing that it would be impossible if they acted now. This would seem to imply that the incident in London made her lose her cool-headed personality and develop a much more violent and impulsive one, like the ones of her dead comrades Yumie and Anderson. This is further suggested by her behavior after being shot by the Captain and shooting Walter through the heart; she becomes more enraged and fanatical or simply insane. Heinkel's prototype appeared in Daidoujin Monogatari along with Walter C. Dornez.
Yumie Takagi (高木 由美江 Takagi Yumie?)
Yumiko Takagi (高木 由美子 Takagi Yumiko?)
Debut:hellsing volume 6
Yumie is a katana-wielding Japanese nun. She is a fanatical Catholic and seems to genuinely enjoy killing people with her almost superhuman sword skills. She knows various Batto-jutsu (sword drawing) techniques and is adept enough to kill even from outside the room where her victim is, but is quite capable of smashing men's heads into walls with her bare hands as well. Yumiko has commented how hard it is for her to "get Yumie to sleep" after she has been provoked into action. Her personalities switch places, either by duelling for control inside of their mind, or a strong blow. Heinkel uses this technique to awaken the latent Yumie and have her brutally kill several terrorists in the first volume of the manga's extra Crossfire feature.
In Hellsing chapter 74 Relics, she attacks Walter, enraged after seeing him desecrating Father Anderson's remains. Although moving extremely swiftly, she is outmatched and cut into pieces by Walter's wires. Heinkel is hysterical and aims her guns at Walter, only to be shot and wounded by the Captain. Yumie makes appears in OVAs 5 and 8 and in the drama CD adaption of Crossfire between OVA 7 and 6.
The character of Yumie originally appeared in Crossfire as the violent alter-ego of Yumiko Takagi, a bespectacled and pacifist nun. Despite nearly identical character traits, the Yumie in Hellsing and the Yumie/Yumiko of Crossfire are two entirely separate characters, as Crossfire is a separate story and not part of the Hellsing canon due to Maxwell's appearance, so it is most likely another prototype manga. Her prototype was in Hi and Low along with Integra's.
Note: the Japanese characters for "Yumiko" (由美子) and "Yumie" (由美江) differ only on the last syllable. Many people tend to make the mistake of calling her berserker personality Yumi (with two syllables) instead of the correct name, Yumie (three syllables). Yumi (由美), Yumiko (由美子) and Yumie (由美江) are all different names. Yumi, however, forms base name for both Yumiko and Yumie. Yumi, as written, is composed of the kanji for "Significance/Reason" and "Beauty". The name 'Yumiko' adds the character for "Child" to the end (子 ko) — which seems to be metaphorically symbolic of that half of her personality, since she's innocent and childlike in her Yumiko form. The name Yumie adds the character for "Inlet" (江 e).
Yumiko is a shy, quiet nun who gets easily frightened, whereas Yumie provides raw, unfettered violence with her nigh-superhuman strength, fearlessness and fearsome katana skills that make her the ideal partner to Heinkel. Maxwell often berates the pair, not because of their excessive violence, but rather because their activities as assassins, mentioned as to have been dressed in the raiments of the Catholic Church, indicating a connection to the Vatican and by proxy to Iscariot, which is supposed to be a secret agency outside normal knowledge. She is also the only character of Japanese ethnicity in Hellsing.
He is small, plump, unprepossessing, ruthless and psychopathic, his unpleasant smile is the mask on a madman. He commands with a good-natured attitude, which can change in a moment to cruelty or grandiose elation. In the manga, if the information given by the corrupt priest that was interrogated by Enrico Maxwell is correct then the Major was between 26 and 27 years old in the year 1941 (just after participating in Operation Barbarossa), thus placing him in his late eighties during the Hellsing series. He was probably born somewhere around 1913 or 1914 (being 26/7 in 1941). According to his prototype character in another one of Kohta Hirano's earlier works called Coyote, it is implied that The Major grew up in a troubled home with an alcoholic father and a mother who worked as a prostitute that received clients in their own home. After his father's death, his mother continued her adultery by engaging in sexual services for various men. This incident led the young Major/Montana Max to grab his father's pistol and kill his mother and her client. He then wandered the streets homeless until he was found by Adolf Hitler and made into a lieutenant. These incidents led The Major to become indifferent towards rape, sex, and acts of violence, a trait his mother had shared when she showed indifference to the death of The Major's father. As this is just a prototype manga, it should not be taken as serious facts about the Major.
The official manga leaves out all details about his past. His name is never mentioned nor any for of explanation for his behaviour other than that he simply likes war.
A former first lieutenant of the SS, Adolf Hitler issued a special order (#666) placing him in charge of a top-secret project, the main focus of which was the perfection of an artificial vampirization process. The success of this project would allow the Nazis to utilize vampires in battle and turn the tide of the war in their favor. The operation was attacked and shut down by a young Walter Dornez and Alucard in Warsaw, Poland, in 1944. However, the defeat proved to be only a minor setback, as the Major and his subordinates managed to escape to South America unharmed. There they resumed their research.
Although other Nazi officers with higher ranks accompanied Millennium to their South American hideout and attempted to exert their authority, the vampire officers loyal to the Major quickly executed them. Depending on the translation used, the Major is variously a sub-commander or the founder of Millennium, as well as the leader of a Werwolf special force.
The original purpose of the Nazi vampire research was to ensure Germany's victory in World War II and to create a Reich that would last for a thousand years (hence the name "Millennium"), but the Major claims that he has "no purpose". He states that he simply wishes to start an endless war. In his famous "I Love War" speech, he elaborates on his love for all facets of war, regardless of which side is winning. While addressing Integra Hellsing's question as to his specific goal, he says that he has no goal. He explains that while others settle on no means in obtaining their goals, he will settle on no goals in obtaining his means.
In the final chapters, the Major and Integra Hellsing duel to the death. As the final battle starts, because of an attack by Seras, the Major's left side is blown off, revealing himself to be a cyborg. After this discovery, Integra debates whether he was a monster or not, since he wasn't literally human. The Major responds by saying that as long as his will existed he was human, no matter what has become of his body. His reason for despising Alucard is that, though the Major is a human who looks like a monster, the vampire is a monster who looks like a human, something that he can never forgive. In the end, Integra shoots the Major to kill him,but the Major dies with a smile on his face. It appears that he has died a happy man with no regrets, having fulfilled his dream of a grand war.
In the end the Major is responsible for the deaths of over 3 million people.
The Major did not first appear in Hellsing proper, his first appearance was actually in Hirano's earlier manga "Coyote". In Coyote, he was mostly the same character with a few slight differences including being a lot slimmer, and being referred to by the name "Montana Max" (probably taken from the omonymous character from the Tiny Toon Adventures animated series). Hellsing actually includes what appear to be nods to Coyote in that The Major's old name is placed in a few pieces of the Manga's art and in panels, although it's very inconsistent and is spelled differently almost every time. Fans have actually adopted "Montana Max" as the Major's name in Hellsing, but as the name has never been written in any of the dialogue whatsoever, it is more likely than not just another in-joke from Hirano.
The Doctor (or "Doc") (博士（ドク） Doctor (Doku or Dokuta)?) was a member of the Millennium forces who usually appeared dressed in a perpetually bloodstained white labcoat, an unusual shirt which reveals his lower torso, and glasses with an assortment of adjustable, multilensed spectacles his prototype was recycled from Doc's story.
He was Millennium's top scientist of physiology and technology, the genius behind many of their projects. Perhaps unstable, certainly eccentric, but undeniably brilliant, it was his research that led to the creation of a Nazi vampire army out of 1,000 volunteers in the 'Letztes Battalion'. Hirano has stated that he created Schrödinger, which goes well with his 'mad scientist' reputation. The two argued almost constantly. He appeared in the manga and OVA series, and as a silhouette to the right of the Major in the promotional video (found on the first DVD of the English release). It is possible that the Doctor created the Major's cyborg body, but it is currently unknown as to whether he is also a cyborg or something else. The Doctor suffers from an extreme case of dermatophagia.
Per his nametag shown in Volume 3, his name appears to be Avondale Napyeer. The nametag is difficult to read, however, and no other name has been given thus far. It appears that based on Chapter 93 that The Doctor was going to release "She", the enigmatic, heavily bandaged figure from Hellsing: The Dawn.
At the end in chapter 94, he was arguing with Walter about how useless he was, that one day he will overthrow and defeat Alucard and that he's being a failed experiment. Doc tries to press a button from his remote to kill Walter. However, Walter uses his wires and cuts off Doc's arm and leg, making him fall to the ground and ripping the blanket off SHE, revealing that she was Mina Harker, who Alucard, as Dracula, forced her to drink his blood. Doc had, years after Mina's death, exhumed her body and used it to start his experiments in perfecting the Vampire mass-production project, hoping that, one day, Millennium would be able to defeat Alucard (or as Walter said "trying to imitate him"). The Doc, not long after that revelation, was buried under a large heap of falling debris, killing him instantly.
There is also some speculation amongst fans over whether or not The Doctor's design/image was inspired by Rammstein member and keyboardist Flake (aka Christian Lorenz). Both have similar nicknames, Dok and Doktor, and some very similar styles of dress, as well as a similar blond hair style much like one Flake once sported.
The Captain is the Major's silent, stoic adjutant and bodyguard. Unlike the Major and Lieutenant Rip van Winkle, he still wears a full uniform in the main story, which is similar to a M42 Greatcoat with its neckguard constantly turned up, and an M43 officer's cap emblazoned with the Totenkopf symbol. The Captain is a natural werewolf, able to transform at will and fight in either human, werewolf or wolf form. Like Alucard is Hellsing's trump card, and Alexander Anderson is Iscariot's, he could be considered Millennium's.
Abilities and Weapons
The Captain possesses immense superhuman ability, even while in human form. This includes superhuman senses, strength (strong enough to bend steel bars or shatter limbs with a single kick), speed, reflexes/reactions, agility, dexterity, flexibility, coordination, balance, and endurance. His iron-like flesh can withstand Walter's wires (which can easily slice solid steel), even as they are tightened around his bare neck. He seems to be able to fall great distances without sustaining any damage, as seen in chapter 58, Wizardry (2). The Captain has some regenerative ability, as he quickly regenerated his mutilated hand in The Dawn. Being a real life 'wolf-man' he also has the ability to transform into white, fur-like mist similar to Alucard and is shown on several scenes growing fur. In addition to his natural abilities, the Captain possesses two modified Mauser C96s with incredibly long barrels, and a combat knife though he never uses it.
The mysterious SS officer fought a fourteen year-old Walter C. Dornez as well as Alucard during an attack on Millennium's main research facility in Warsaw during World War II in 1944, in the yet unfinished prequel story Hellsing: The Dawn. He squared off with Walter and managed to resist his wires, then choke him into submission before the fight was interrupted by Alucard. Alucard, on the other hand, backed out after getting kicked in half by the Captain, and left Walter to fend for himself while chasing after the Major. It is believed, based on information in the main storyline, that Walter came to an agreement with Millennium and left the compound, having seemingly aided in the destruction of the early undead soldier project. However, there is no official word that explicitly confirms or denies this yet.
Later in the same year, the Captain participated in the infamous Malmedy massacre on 17 December, during the Battle of the Bulge. (Based on a photograph in chapter 82.) From a photograph taken on the 20th, he and the Major were still in the Ardennes area. (On the backcover of volume 3.) He would ultimately travel with the rest of Millennium to South America and stay in hiding for decades.
Over 55 years later, the Captain was sent to retrieve Walter for a certain process, during the invasion of England in 1999. As Walter and Integra Hellsing attempted to drive back to Hellsing HQ, Walter spotted the Captain blocking the road and approaching them. Walter then urged his master to flee, and attacked The Captain with his wires. The Captain caught them in his hands, and it looked like it would lead into a great duel, except the duel was never shown, leading fans to speculate about the Captain and Walter's relationship and Walter's loyalties. Later on, The Captain leaped from the Major's zeppelin to confront Alucard with Alexander Anderson. He was surprised to see Alucard's 'counter-attack', and backed off for the time being.
Several facts about this man were revealed in later chapters of The Dawn:
- In chapter 4, after waking up and exiting his coffin, Alucard immediately sensed that The Captain was neither human nor vampire, and remarked that he thought his kind had been wiped out long ago.
- In chapter 5, the Captain had his right arm blown off by Alucard, but he quickly regenerated it and transformed into a "wolf-man". Although this might seem to imply that all of Millennium's officers and top soldiers are lycanthropes, the term used for their elite soldiers is a reference to the historical Werwolf forces, with The Captain being the only actual 'werewolf'. Also, in chapter 5, the Major makes a pun alluding to this difference when questioned by his officers about the Captain being enough defense against Walter and Alucard.
Although he was seen in chapter 68 Might and Magic (2) with long strands of hair forming on his face, chapter 74 Relics shows The Captain swiftly shooting Heinkel Wolfe in his human form. It is revealed in chapter 76 Finest hour that he deliberately shot through her cheek to spare Heinkel's life. The Captain attempts to directly communicate with Heinkel by making gestures with his head, which is interpreted as a warning to not interfere with Walter and Alucard's duel. After tossing Heinkel a first aid kit, he leaps up into the air and departs. This scene has been a subject of interest to many fans. The Captain, a werewolf with incredible strength, speed, and the ability to regenerate, would have no need for a first aid kit, and hence, no need to even carry one. Hirano's intentions in making the Captain spare Heinkel remain unclear though it may simply be that Hirano intended to show that the Captain was more noble than his comrades, and/or had some sense of chivalry for fellow warriors.
At the end of chapter 81, the Captain confronted Seras Victoria and Sir Integra, who stormed the Major's zeppelin. In chapter 82, the Captain allowed Integra to pass, even pointing out the direction of the bridge to her, then engaged Seras in a gun battle, which ended with him transforming into a werewolf. In chapter 84, he stood in a two-page spread, facing Seras in the form of a monstrously large wolf. The Captain then flew toward her in a similar way to Alucard's Baskerville familiar and dealt a powerful blow to Seras, ricocheting her off a wall and the ceiling. He swiftly changed into his bipedal werewolf form and kicked her down through the floor of the Hindenburg II and onto the ground below, jumping down to follow her. In chapter 85, he displays even more of his mist-like abilities, as even after being dealt what would appear to be a fatal blow from Seras' shadows, the Captain just dissolved into mist only to reform, standing atop her shadows, unharmed.
In chapter 86, he continued to trade blows with the Draculina, until Seras managed to stop one of his kicks by biting and holding his leg in her mouth. This gave Pip Bernadotte (from within Seras' body) the chance to thrust a tooth with a silver filling from a concentration camp prisoner into the Captain's chest. The chapter ends with the Captain's dogtag falling to the floor and splitting in half. The Captain then falls to the floor dying, he lies still while a smile slowly creeps on his face. He is then shown laughing (like a child according to Seras) before his body bursts into flames like previous Millennium members. Unlike the rest of the Millennium members, this may have been because he had finally been freed from the horrendous things he had done and could finally rest in peace. This can be determined from his chivalrous nature shown several times throughout the manga series.
The Captain is based on a character in one of Hirano's older works, called "Desert Shutzstaffel". Unlike his Hellsing counterpart, this early incarnation of the Captain spoke and opposed the Axis forces during World War II. Interestingly, the Captain shows little enthusiasm for Millennium's Nazi traditions. While the other soldiers wear Swastikas and address the Major as their Führer, the Captain's only badge of allegiance is the Totenkopf on his cap. Given that he was already a century old by the beginning of World War II, it is possible that the Captain's motive for joining Millennium was to find a worthy opponent to be slain by, rather than the hysteria of the Third Reich that gripped Germany prior to the war.
First Lieutenant Rip van Winkle
First Lieutenant Rip van Winkle (リップヴァーン・ウィンクル中尉 First Lieutenant Rippuvān Winkuru?) is a fictional character in the manga Hellsing and a member of the Millennium forces. One of Millennium's top soldiers and a member of the Werewolf special forces, van Winkle commands her troops to steal a VTOL carrier called the Eagle from the British which she subsequently renames the "Adler" (German for "eagle") and paints a swastika in blood on its main deck. Along with Zorin Blitz and Schrödinger, she briefly makes a cameo in a flashback during Hellsing III, and also during the ending credits. She makes her full appearance in OVA IV of the anime series. She seems to be bipolar.
In Hellsing: The Dawn, Rip makes an appearance as a young soldier fifty years ago, encountering Alucard after his initial defeat by the Captain and while he was smoking with his sentient coffin. She appears in full uniform, wearing her hair in two braided pigtails, and bears the rank of Untersturmführer. The glasses she wears (which are not actually hers, but were mixed up in the confusion) make it difficult for her to focus properly, and Alucard spends some time trying to make her understand who he is and why he's in the building. Finally, realizing that he is an enemy, Rip tries to shoot Alucard, but is knocked unconscious by his sentient coffin in an amusing way: being Judo chopped and kicked across the hall.
In the present day Hellsing manga, Rip van Winkle is assigned by the Major to take over a British ship, Eagle, as a distraction for Alucard. Whether or not she knew the exact condition of her mission is unknown. The Ship's vice-captain was offered the chance to become a Vampire if he then devoured all those on board, turning them into ghouls. When Rip arrives she killed the Vice-Captain who destroyed the ships crew and allowed her own troops (members of the Letztes Bataillon) onto the deck. She paints the Nazi emblem onto the deck of the ship in blood and paint, and begins to wait eagerly for her arrival to London. Later SAS squads are sent over to destroy the ship but are instead completely destroyed by one shot of Rip's magic bullets. Once Sir Penwood and his staff see how powerful Rip Van Winkle actually is they allow the Hellsing Organization to intervene. Integra Hellsing sends Alucard over on a remodeled SR-71 Reconnaissance Jet allowing him to easily land on the ship, destroying all of the Vampires, save Rip, on board. Alucard instills a great deal of fear in Rip as he approaches, and inevitably kills her, despite her last-ditch effort to force him over the edge of the Eagle's deck with a magic bullet. Alucard impales her through the chest just left of her heart with her own gun, after being repeatedly peppered by the bullet and then literally catching it in his mouth and breaking it to shrapnel. He then drinks her blood in the climax to Volume 5 of the manga before using his shadows to devour her body, killing her and making her his familiar.
Ironically, The Major would not permit the Doctor to incinerate her by activating her chip as he had done with Alhambra and Jan Valentine, and in fact, in a rare gesture of "generosity," requests other members of Millennium to Heil her, bidding her "Auf Wiedersehen." ("Sayonara" in the Japanese version) Her mission was to effectively trap Alucard on the Eagle because he cannot cross water without the aid of some form of external transport such as a plane or ship. By using the Eagle as a decoy, Millennium isolates Alucard in the middle of the ocean while the rest of Millennium makes its landing operation; to boost the morale of his army to a fever point, the Major glorifies Van Winkle's death (even promising her through the radio they would again meet in Valhalla) so hers will be the first death of the operation, thus priming the army for the destruction of London. Unfortunately for Millennium, Alucard takes control of the ship and manages to return to coastline, though the Major himself seems to be anticipating this.
Rip later shows up as a familiar after Alucard releases his zero restriction, merged with Tubalcain Alhambra. After helping shoot down Maxwell's helicopter and attacking Anderson, she is destroyed in a massive fire along with all the other familiars likely killing her for good. This scene was not published in Young King OURs, but was added to volume 9. In several scenes she is also seen with an umbrella, which could be a reference to the practice of World War II German snipers to use umbrellas with camouflage foliage woven between the arms as light, adaptable and mobile personal camouflage.
Rip van Winkle is a youthful-looking vampire, despite the fact that she is over 70 years old. She is a tall woman, with freckles on her cheeks and glasses. She has long black hair that goes about to her knees; a large curlicue that often sticks up from the front of her head. She usually seen dressed in a black suit and green tie, with brown shoes and a pink office shirt. She also wears white gloves, presumably to protect her hands when firing her musket, and a large silver Swastika pendant around her neck.
She enjoys singing operas, especially Der Freischütz, and she often compares herself to the character Caspar from that opera. The Major even notes that she is very much like Caspar (and also likens Alucard to Zamiel, the antagonist of that opera and representative of the devil). Additionally similar bullets, that never miss their target, are used by Kaspar. The Major at one point tells Rip the end of Der Freischütz and says she'll suffer a similar fate. The exact quote is "First Lieutenant Rip Van Winkle, do you know how Der Freischütz ends? Kaspar, having trifled with the Black Huntsman Zamiel, is whisked away to hell for his sins. His corpse is then thrown into a ravine to be eaten by wolves. Prepare yourself, First Lieutenant, for now, Zamiel comes to collect you." She believes that the Zamiel in her life is Alucard, and he instills a great deal of fear in her. Rip is rather childish compared to most characters in the series; while on board the Eagle, she counts down the time to Millennium's attack with a child's alarm clock with a cartoon face on it. She also has a freckled face, characteristic of schoolgirls, and in 1944 wears her hair in pigtails which further emphasises that point. When she senses Alucard's approach, she starts shaking, and at one point retreats within the ship sobbing. This, and the manner of her death, makes her one of the more sympathetic villains of the series. Despite this she can be quite vicious depending on her mood, ruthlessly killing the zombified crew of the Eagle along with their vampiric captain. Also when shooting down Alucard's plane, an evil grin is seen on her face.
Rip uses a long-barreled flintlock musket that fires magic bullets which "punish all without distinction," tracking targets of their own accord, and which are seemingly armor-piercing (destroying helicopters, fighter jets and missiles with ease). These magic bullets are even able to change their trajectories in mid-flight and repeatedly pepper a target before expiring. Rip seems to have a limited amount of these bullets, as she only uses one at a time. In fact, she uses only five on-screen before death throughout the entire series and only one directly against Alucard (so far: she might use them again during The Dawn.) It's possible that this could be due to the fact that she has to go through the slow process of manually reloading the musket after each shot, forcing her to rely on taking out all of her targets with a single, decisive shot during engagements. Rip also seems to have some measure of enhanced resilience as she takes a punch to the jaw from Alucard where the only visible damage is that her mouth is bleeding. She does not appear to have any other powers beyond this however. It's also possible that she's a master pilot, as seen in her debut when Rip is shown piloting a helicopter to the Eagle with seemingly just her feet while singing and preparing her musket.
First Lieutenant Zorin Blitz
First Lieutenant Zorin Blitz (ゾーリンブリッツ中尉 First Lieutenant Zōrin Burittsu?) is a member of the Millennium forces and is a tall, massively muscled female vampire who works for the Millennium organization and is part of its Werwolf force. She is also the commander of one of Millennium's zeppelin forces, and is apparently the instigator of the Valentine Brothers' attack on the Hellsing mansion (though this is simply conjecture from mixing the manga and anime storylines).
She is a formidable fighter, wielding a giant scythe with enough force to cut a man in half. One side of her body is covered with tattoos, which include some designs but are mostly letters (into which Hirano occasionally sneaks phrases such as "Trigun Maximum," "Gungrave," and "Elvis Lives"); when exercising her power of illusion, they flow from her body onto the walls and ground around her, extending her influence over the area. She can also read minds/souls allowing her to determine what illusions work best on her victims.
She attacked the Hellsing mansion during Millennium's invasion of London (Operation Seelöwe 2) and killed Captain Pip Bernadotte, leading Seras Victoria to drink his blood and awaken her latent vampiric powers. The final time she attempted to wield her illusions against Seras Victoria, she instead was confronted with an unfamiliar landscape: instead of only one soul to focus her power against, she found Pip's soul inside, merged with Seras' own (represented by many shards of memories contained within the two of them), making it impossible for her to fool either, and she subsequently lost her power as Seras shattered the shards, confusing Zorin and allowing the young vampire to deliver the deathblow. Seras subsequently killed Zorin in a spectacularly violent and bloody manner, scraping her face across a wall like butter across toast. Right before Seras did the deed, Schrödinger appears and informs Blitz that her inevitable death will come in Seras' hands instead of being burned, as the Major and the Doc are too busy working on vampirizing Walter and had no time to activate the microchip, abandoning Zorin to a painful, humiliating death at the fledging's hands. Her orders were to treat Seras as much as a valuable enemy as Alucard himself - orders Zorin ignored by leaving her alive after maiming her by scraping her eyes on her scythe, blinding her, and paralyzing her with a blow to the spine. So Zorin dies in a complete contrast to Rip van Winkle, an unglorified death that Schrödinger later describes to the Major as like "a worthless insect". Ironically, these are the same words she used to describe Pip.
Her tattoos are different from panel to panel, in terms of images (in volume 7 she is shown to have a pentagram on her right cheek, though in at least one panel it is a hexagram instead) as well as number and arrangement of letters, though it's never stated if they actually change or if Hirano simply didn't bother trying to maintain identical patterns of hundreds of letters and images.
Zorin appears briefly at the end of OVA III, with a full appearance in OVA IV, appears in OVA V, is a central character in OVA VI, and makes her final appearance in OVA VII. Her last name means "lightning" in German and may be a reference to the World War II German military tactic of Blitzkrieg. In the James Bond 007 movie A View to a Kill, actor Christopher Walken plays a villain named Max Zorin who was a chem-engineered ubermensch created in late World War II by Nazi Germany and who possessed a Zeppelin-based flying HQ. He also had May Day, a giant, muscular female bodyguard. It is entirely possible that Hirano drew from these elements in creating his Hellsing character.[original research?]
Junior Warrant Officer Schrödinger
He has the form of a young boy, his exact age is unknown although he appears to be around 14; he has blonde hair and red eyes with cat ears and a perpetual smirk, dressing in a Hitler Youth uniform and holding the rank of Warrant Officer, judging by his insignia Oberstammführer to be exact. In the OVA series Hellsing Ultimate, Schrödinger can be seen to have a tail when Doc tells him he can look at The Captain's guidebook, though previously in the same scene he is shown to not have one and this is therefore normally associated to be a reference to the Captain's werewolf characteristics. Usually found sitting underneath the Major's throne like a pet, he also acts as an envoy for Millennium. Due to his ability to be "everywhere and nowhere" at the same time, he entered the Hellsing mansion without tipping off their defenses to deliver a message; after Integra orders Alucard to shoot him in the head, he later reappeared unscathed back at Millennium's headquarters. (This ability, his name, and his being feline are obviously a reference to the famous "Schrödinger's cat" scenario in quantum physics.) Apparently he has a slight attraction towards Seras, at least hinting it when he first sees her as he stares stunned at her as he notices her for the first time.
In The OVA
Schrödinger first appears in OVA 4, showing up out of nowhere in the conference between Hellsing, the Queen and Iscariot. He delivers a message from The Major on a two-way hand held television, declaring war on England and Alucard. After he finishes Integra orders Alucard to kill Schrödinger, blasting his head off point-blank. His body disappears soon after when no one was looking. He turns up in the command center of the Deus Ex Machina, apparently unscathed, commenting how the Major should try to lose weight, as he could travel half way around the world, have his head blown off, and come back there in the time it took for the Major to walk down a hallway. In the same episode, he appears again on the deck of the British ship Eagle in order to deliver another message from The Major via two-way hand held television to a defeated Rip van Winkle, saying "Auf Wiedersehen." with the other troops as Alucard devoured her.
- The credits of the fourth Hellsing OVA feature Schrödinger traversing a world colored in the Nazi colors, red and black, launching V1 rockets at various London landmarks which are destroyed as Schrödinger happily goes past them. As he continues to march across the world, he is met by various colored images that pay homage to the frivolous Millennium otaku omakes done by Kouta Hirano, the creator of Hellsing.
His next appearance is in OVA 7, showing up in the remnants of Seras Victoria and Pip Bernadotte's memories to inform Zorin Blitz that Doc and The Major got their hands on a "new toy" (Walter) and are unable to attend to incinerating Zorin. He then bids her farewell, leaving her to be killed by a deranged Seras. He then shows up on the bridge of the Deus Ex with the Major overlooking the scorched and wartorn London, commenting, with a smile, on how his only concern is for destruction and warfare, gladly dragging his allies down to hell with him. In the anime, Schrödinger has purple eyes but are red when he is seen in sillouette.
Powers and abilities
The exact nature of Schrödinger's abilities has yet to be defined, although, due to the "Schrödinger's cat" references, they could be quantum-reality based. This is indirectly confirmed by the Major - he states that Schrödinger only exists for as long as he is aware of himself. He was able to appear in Hellsing's conference room without difficulty, and also appeared to Zorin Blitz while Blitz was attempting to attack Seras Victoria's mind, indicating that he can appear in mental realms as well. Schrödinger himself mysteriously states that he is "everywhere and nowhere". To put it simply his power is best represented in this phrase, "I think, therefore I am." If he thinks he can appear in someone's mind then, he can, if he thinks he can heal after being shot, he can, and if he thinks he can be at one place or another, he can.
This also explains his apparent regeneration/immortality. If he believes that he is unscathed, then he is.
Apart from the Doctor and the Captain, Schrödinger mostly interacts with the Major and seems to share his love of warfare, despite his current lack of fighting. In a dialogue with him, Schrödinger remarked that the Major was a "sadistic man" who takes every living person in his wake, companion or foe, with him in his "languid charge to the bowels of hell."
In chapter 77 Finesthour 2, he greets Sir Integra and Seras as they enter the landed Hindenburg II, making the mistake of continuing to call Integra "Fräulein" after the Major stopped doing so as a sign of respect (in the beginning of episode one of the OVA, Integra's uncle Richard had referred to Integra as "Fräulein" when he tried to kill the girl; "Fräulein" is also considered a condescending way to address a woman in modern spoken German). Integra then swiftly blows off his head (again) with her handgun. Due to his abilities he survives this blow, turning up in chapter 84 Warcraft 2. In chapter 87, Wolffang 2, Schrödinger appears again. He smiles maniacally and decapitates himself with an SS knife with the words inscribed into it "Meine Ehre heißt Treue" or "My honor is loyalty," the slogan of the SS. His body then falls into the blood that Alucard is drawing and absorbing into himself. Schrödinger was in fact the "poison" that the Major spoke of in chapter 84, Warcraft 2.
As Alucard's eyes close, Integra demands that the Major explains what is happening. The Major says that Schrödinger "carried the will of the self-observing Schrödinger's Cat" and "as long as he recognizes himself, he's everywhere and nowhere." But now that he is consumed by Alucard and is mixed with millions of other minds, he can no longer recognize himself, and by extension neither can Alucard, the one who has absorbed him. Whilst neither are technically dead, they do not exist in any location because they cannot recognize themselves, and have thus become "No more than a set of imaginary numbers."
Alucard seems to recognize his defeat, says farewell to Integra, and seems to disappear into thin air, leaving only the bloody Hellsing-pentagram on the ground, possibly symbolizing him being sealed away once again. Yet, Alucard manages, in the end after 30 years, to return; Alucard kills off the 3,424,867 souls that resided in him after the attack on London so he can recognize himself. In doing so, it appears that he gained Schrödinger's powers, as shown by the fact that he appeared out of nowhere in Integra's bedroom and was perfectly fine after not having drank any blood for 30 years. Before this, a span of twenty to forty years without blood reduced him to a corpse-like state. Presumably Schrödinger's soul is still within Alucard, as he mentions that he killed everyone except one and says "and now I am everywhere and nowhere"; implying he now has full access to Schrödinger's abilities. With a smile on Integra's face, she welcomes Alucard home by offering him a little bit of her blood (much in the same way she offered her blood to Seras Victoria in volume 4).
Tubalcain Alhambra (トバルカイン・アルハンブラ Tobarukain Aruhanbura?) is a member of the Nazi organisation Millennium and a namesake of Tubalcain, a biblical descendant of Cain who was said to be a metalworker. Alhambra is also the name of a Moorish palace in Granada, Spain.
Also known as "The Dandy" ("The Dandy Man" in the OVA), Tubalcain promised Brazilian police and military officers immortality through becoming vampires in exchange for killing Alucard and Seras Victoria, who were staying in a local hotel. Later it is revealed that his goal was to leave Alucard with less ammunition for their duel. In the dub, Tubalcain is given a Spanish accent of unknown denomination. Physically, The Dandy Man is tall and thin, with goldish green eyes, light grey hair, and a thin brown moustache. He dresses in a brown suit, vest, and wide-brimmed fedora with a blue tie (the suit, vest, and fedora are white in the manga while the tie is black). Like many Hellsing characters, Alhambra also wears white gloves. Overall, his dapper appearance is quite similar to a deceased DC Comics supervillain, the Gambler, as well as a reference to the archetypal malandro character portrayed in the Brazilian culture.
According to the character descriptions in the Dark Horse version of Volume Four, Tubalcain was a First Lieutenant in Millennium. He justified his actions to the public by labeling Alucard and Seras as "terrorists". It is unclear as to how he became a part of Millennium and his overall role within it. Given his ethnicity, he was probably let in sometime after Millennium's exodus to Brazil and likely acted as an agent within the country.
When Alucard demanded that he stopped using pawns and fight directly, his attacks consisted of razor-sharp playing cards that could apparently cut through nearly anything. Furthermore, Alucard had great difficulty regenerating from the damage they dealt. This is slightly similar to the tactics used by Gambit in X-Men, though Alhambra's cards do not explode when they collide with an object(Unless the object is explosive in nature). When injured, he re-forms himself in a flurry of cards; they seem to be the equivalent of the masses of shadows and the pools of blood that appear when Alucard is shapeshifting or re-attaching limbs, and also denotes similarities to the DC villain Double Down. This is a bit ambiguous, however, as it may have been an illusion or a doppelgänger used to distract Alucard. This is the most likely possibility considering that when Alucard destroyed the doppelgänger Tubalcain then attacked from behind while exclaiming that Alucard "fell into [his] trap". When shot at by Seras, Alhambra spins his cards in a circle around his body, creating some sort of shield from the bullets. In terms of his other vampiric abilities, Alhambra possesses a great deal of speed and strength. His running speed appears to rival Alucard's, and with effort he can dodge Alucard's bullets. Alhambra is also shown to be able to defy gravity, shown when he leaps a great height and nonchalantly walks up a wall in the OVA.
In the beginning of the duel, Tubalcain has the upper hand in the battle, as it seems that Alucard has been outmatched and is having difficulty healing from the wounds caused by Alhambra's cards. However, Alucard then reveals that, just like Luke Valentine, Alhambra had only been toyed with. He tells Tubalcain to “Scream like a pig” as he prepares to release his restrictions to level one. Confident in his victory, Alhambra continues to attack Alucard but fails to do any real damage. At that point, Seras intervenes and attacks Alhambra from a distance, firing a rifle and the Harkonnen at him. Alhambra deals with all these attacks with relative ease, and instead only gets annoyed. However, Seras Victoria’s distraction combined with Alucard’s own shadow manipulating tricks enabled Alucard to close the distance between him and the Millennium agent engaging him in close combat. As Arthur Hellsing says in a flashback in the first chapter of volume 4 (the chapter preceding Alhambra's defeat), "Close range fighting with a vampire equals death".
A power struggle ensues, resulting in a huge eruption of energy. After kicking Alhambra's leg off at the knee, Alucard once again tells Alhambra to scream like a pig, before tearing through Alhambra's arm, giving him a chance to drink Alhambra's blood and absorb Alhambra's soul, thus gaining access to Alhambra's memories. These memories, which contained a record of Millennium's plans, are later related by Alucard to a special session of the Round Table Conference. After Alucard drinks his blood, the Doctor burns him to death, just as he had done to Jan Valentine. His soul later reappears, along with all the others absorbed by Alucard over the ages, when Integra releases his control art restriction system to Level Zero in volume 8. After helping shoot down Maxwell's helicopter and attacking Anderson, he is destroyed in a massive fire along with all the other familiars. This scene was not published in Young King OURs, but was added to volume 9.
