Andrew Hollander was born and raised in West Orange, New Jersey. In his teenage years Hollander performed in and wrote songs for a series of rock and roll bands. By 15 he was musical directing concerts which gave him the opportunity to perform with Motown stars The Marvelettes, The Shirelles, and Mary Wilson of The Supremes.

Hollander received his B.A. in Music from the University of Massachusetts where he worked alongside iconic jazz musician Yusef Lateef and played piano on three of Lateef's records.
