Andy Devine (born 28 February 1942[1]), is an English actor primarily on television, whose best known role has been Shadrach Dingle on one of ITV's longest-running soap opera, Emmerdale. He has played Shadrach on and off since 1998 and made his final appearance in July 2010. His credits have occasionally been confused with those of the gravelly-voiced American star character actor Andy Devine (1905–1977).
Andy Devine began his acting career in 1973. His first TV role was as 'Draconian' in 6 episodes of Doctor Who, He also had a memorably prominent role as a gay man in 1999–2000 episodes of the iconic Channel 4 series Queer As Folk.
He also performed his Shadrach character on ITV's Harry Hill's TV Burp
He also starred in the The Girl From Tomorrow an early '90s Australian children's drama. He was a shop keeper in the first episode.
In January 2010, Devine (then aged 67) announced that he was to appear less frequently in Emmerdale.[2] On the 23rd of July 2010, Devine left Emmerdale after 10 years as Andy's character Shadrach Dingle was killed off in an emotional Storyline.
