Anglia Tonight is a regional television news and current affairs programme, produced by ITV Anglia (formerly Anglia Television), serving the East of England and parts of the East Midlands and South East England. The programme is usually broadcast at 18:00 every weeknight, also including local sports news and local features of interest. Other bulletins are branded as just plain Anglia News.

Like all regional news programmes on ITV1 in England and Wales and Channel Television, it uses the generic ITV font and idents.

Former reporter and weather presenter Becky Jago and former relief presenter Jonathan Wills currently present the programme.

[edit] Overview

Re-launched in June 1990 as Anglia News, there were originally two sub-regional editions for the East (Norfolk, Suffolk and North Essex), and West (Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire) of the region. Both editions were broadcast from Norwich. By 2008, Anglia News bulletins during GMTV and at weekends had become pan-regional.

As of 12 February 2009, other Anglia News output also reverted to being pan-regional. The remaining sub-regional elements are:

  • An 8-minute opt-out during the main 18:00 programme, similar to BBC Look East's Close Up opt-out.
  • Localised weather forecast during the 18:00 programme.
  • The full late weeknight bulletins. Both sub-regional editions utilise exactly the same presenter(s) and studio/set, therefore one of the two opt-outs - depending on the day's news - is pre-recorded 'as live' shortly before broadcast.

Anglia News replaced Anglia Television’s pan-regional About Anglia in 1990. The 18:00 programme changed title to Anglia Tonight on 2 February 2004, although it was called Anglia News Tonight for a short period beforehand.

[edit] Broadcast times

Anglia News airs on ITV1 Anglia seven days a week. ITV Anglia provides three news bulletins during Daybreak. The lunchtime edition of the programme follows on from the ITV News at 13:30, providing a seven-minute round-up of the day's developments at 13:55.

The main evening edition of Anglia Tonight begins at 18:00 and ends at 18:30. The late news update from the Anglia sub-regions follows the ITV News at Ten, airing between 22:30 and 22:35 every weeknight.

Anglia News airs two bulletins at the weekend - one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
