Anna was born in Krems an der Donau, Austria. At the age of 9 she lost her parents and had to move to Vienna where she worked as a chamber-maid for 11 years. On January 11, 1811 she married Adam Liszt in Unterfrauenhaid. He was an amateur pianist and cellist and manorial clerk at the court of Count Esterházy. Their son, Franz Liszt, a concert pianist, a composer and a teacher of piano, was born in Raiding, Hungary on 22 October 1811.

Later in life she spent her time caring for Liszt's children, Cosima, Blandine, and later Daniel while he travelled Europe with his then lover, authoress Marie d'Agoult. She died in Paris, France.
