[edit] Company details
AnsaldoBreda was formed in 2001 by the merger of Ansaldo Trasporti and Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie,[1] and is part of the Finmeccanica holding.[2] It has production sites on four locations in Italy: Naples, Reggio Calabria, Palermo, and Pistoia. The company employs 2,400 people in total.[1] Since 2008, Salvatore Bianconi is the Chief Executive Officer of AnsaldoBreda.[3]
[edit] Products
AnsaldoBreda manufactures railway cars, trams, and trains for commuter rail, high-speed rail, and main lines.[4] They also developed a driverless metro system.
The Sirio is a low-floor tram model and is used in cities throughout Europe such as Athens, Gothenburg, and Milan. The tram models T-68 and T-69 are used in the United Kingdom alone. The sale to Gothenburg of 40 Sirio units in 2001 has so far been a failure. The last of the 40 trams was delivered five years late, spare parts are in short supply from AnsaldoBreda and the track wear is higher than expected.[5]
Two of AnsaldoBreda's high-speed trains are the ETR 500 model used in Italy and the V250 model planned to be used in the Netherlands and Belgium. The IC4 model is an inter-city train for the Danish main lines. Both the V250 and the IC4 have been plagued by delivery problems; being delayed for several years, they are still not fully operational. The FS Class E403 of locomotives is used in Italy.
One of the clients is the Madrid Metro which uses the trains series 7000 and series 9000 in the busiest lines.
