[edit] Career
He originally played for noted schoolboy club Cherry Orchard and his performances there led to St Patrick's Athletic signing him prior to the 2003 summer season. A series of impressive displays in the season opening league cup showed great promise. However Murphy slipped down the pecking order at St. Pats and he left at the end of the season. He did however play in the League of Ireland Cup final winning side as St Pats beat Longford Town in Richmond Park.
Murphy signed for Monaghan United of the First Division and his performances there led to a move back to the Premier Division with UCD. Once again he lasted only a year with his new club and re-joined St Pats before the start of the 2006 season. After a couple of years at St. Pats, he moved to Sligo Rovers in January 2008.
However when financial problems in July 2008 caused Sligo to make cutbacks, Murphy returned to his home city and joined Bohemians.[1] Anto made his debut for Bohs against Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on 17 July 2008. Within a few months, Anto had picked up his first league winners medal as Bohs marched to the 2008 Premier Division title. His form was rewarded when he was voted on to the League of Ireland Premier Division Team for 2008, receiving 78% of the votes for the right midfield position [2]
Anto netted his first goal for the Gypsies in a 1-0 win over Drogheda United on 27 March 2009.[3] and also netted against Derry City and Galway United during the league season as Bohs and Anto won their second League title in a row. [4]
Murphy began the 2010 season well and scored the winner for Bohs against his former club St. Patrick's Athletic in the final of the Setanta Sports Cup on 15 May.[5] However an achilles injury ruined his season as he missed the majority of games after that high point. Due to financial difficulties at Bohs, Anto was released from the club when his contract expired at the end of the 2010 season.
Despite appearing for Shamrock Rovers in their pre-season friendlies throughout the winter he was not offered a contract by the club. On 21 February 2011, Anthony rejoined St Patrick's Athletic and started his third spell with the Saints.
Anto joined Shelbourne ahead of their 2012 Premier Division campaign.
