Archduke Rainer as Minister President of Austria, Lithograph by Eduard Kaiser, 1860
Archduke Rainer Ferdinand of Austria (Rainer Ferdinand Maria Johann Evangelist Franz Ignaz; 11 January 1827, Milan – 27 January 1913, Vienna) was an Austrian prime minister. He was a son of Archduke Rainer Joseph.
In 1852, he married his cousin Archduchess Maria Carolina of Austria (1825-1915), daughter of Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen. The marriage was a very happy one, and the couple was probably the most popular amongst the Habsburg family. The marriage remained childless.
Rainer was also a general in the Imperial Army, and very interested in art and science, in particular the emerging Papyrology. He donated his Fayum collection in 1899 to the Austrian National Library.
