The town of Archer was founded in 1888 by John Archer, who owned the land on which the town was plotted according to obriencounty.com
Longstanding Mayor Bill Engeltjes oversaw the centennial celebration of 1988. Replete with a parade, fashion show, street dance, and "greased pig" contest, the celebration honored Northwest Iowan heritage.
The town of Archer supports two churches: one Methodist and one Reformed.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 131 people, 55 households, and 40 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,317.1 people per square mile (486.5/km²). There were 63 housing units at an average density of 658.5 per square mile (243.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.21% White and 0.79% Asian.
There were 55 households out of which 25.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.3% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 23.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.68.
In the city the population was spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 18.3% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 31.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 77.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,688, and the median income for a family was $39,167. Males had a median income of $26,375 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,958. There were no families and 1.6% of the population living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 6.1% of those over 64.
