209 is the North American telephone area code for California that covers Stockton, Modesto, Turlock, Merced, Winton, Atwater, Livingston, Manteca, Ripon, Tracy, Lodi, Sonora, Los Banos, San Andreas, Mariposa, and Yosemite, as well as the northern San Joaquin Valley (part of California's Central Valley) and the Sierra Foothills. It was created in a split with area code 916 as a flash-cut on October, 26, 1957, at 12PM. The southern half was split into area code 559 when 209 was split on November 14, 1998.
