Area code 309 is a telephone area code serving the state of Illinois. This area code has been in service since 1966.[citation needed] It covers 21 counties, 501 ZIP codes, and 189 cities,[citation needed] including Bloomington, Canton, East Moline, Galesburg, Macomb, Moline, Morton, Normal, Pekin, Peoria and Rock Island, in addition to many smaller communities within the western part of central Illinois.
As of 2010[update], it has 461 landline telephone prefixes and 95 wireless prefixes serviced by 56 carriers.[clarification needed]
