Area code 760 is a California telephone area code that was split from area code 619 on March 22, 1997.[1] Area code 442 is an overlay of 760 that became effective on November 21, 2009. It encompasses much of the southeastern and southernmost portions of the state. The area includes Imperial, Inyo, and Mono counties, as well as portions of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Kern counties.

History[edit]

Prior to November 5, 1982; this region had been part of area code 714. Area code 760 was created on March 22, 1997 which was part of 619. Within a decade, however, 760 was strained to the point that a new area code would be necessary to serve the area. It was decided that the 760 Area Code would split such that the portions of San Diego and Imperial Counties currently served by 760 would change to a new 442 Area Code. However, amid an outpouring of protests from affected residents and businesses, the CPUC decided that 442 would be added as an overlay to 760. Starting October 24, 2009, 760 area code users are required to dial 1 plus the area code when dialing local numbers, except cell phone users, for whom only the area code and seven digit number is needed.

In August 2010, Google began offering phone numbers from Google Voice that use area code 760.[2]
