History [edit]
760 was created March 23, 1997 out of what was then part of 619. Within a decade, however, 760 was strained to the point that a new area code would be necessary to serve the area. It was decided that the 760 Area Code would split such that the portions of San Diego and Imperial Counties currently served by 760 would change to a new 442 Area Code. However, amid an outpouring of protests from affected residents and businesses, the CPUC decided that 442 would be added as an overlay to 760. Starting October 24, 2009, 760 area code users are required to dial 1 plus the area code when dialing local numbers, except cell phone users, for whom only the area code and seven digit number is needed.
In August 2010, Google began offering phone numbers from Google Voice that use area code 760.[1]
