Area code 617 was the area code that used to cover all of eastern and central Massachusetts (before July 16, 1988), now it only covers the city of Boston, Massachusetts and some of its inner suburbs. Area codes 508 (1988) and 781 (1997) were split off from 617. 617 was one of the original area codes from October, 1947. On May 2, 2001, 857 was overlaid onto 617.
