Area codes 704 and 980

Area code 704 covers Metropolitan Charlotte, in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, and also the cities of Gastonia, and Concord. Area code 980, created as an overlay in 2001, also covers the same area and, at this time, is primarily used for wireless phones and pagers.
704 is one of the original 86 Numbering Plan Areas assigned in 1947. At that time it covered the entire state of North Carolina. It was split in 1954 to create area 919, and again in 1998 to create area 828.
Because of the overlay of the 980 area code, the 704/980 area requires all callers to use ten-digit dialing when making local calls (example: 704-555-5309).
