Area codes 416, 647, and 437 are telephone area codes serving the single rate centre of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The main area code, 416, was one of the original area codes introduced in 1947. It originally covered most of the southern part of Ontario, from Colborne to Niagara Falls to Kitchener-Waterloo. (The rest of Ontario was served by 613.) It has been split twice. The western portion of 416 became area code 519 in 1953, and in 1993 the remaining portion of 416 outside of what was then Metro Toronto became area code 905, which surrounds 416. With the consolidation of Metro Toronto into the "megacity" of Toronto in 1998, 416 became the only area code in Canada serving only one city.

The 1993 split was intended as a long-term solution to relieve exchanges in Canada's largest toll-free calling zone. However, within only five years, 416 was once again close to exhaustion due to Toronto's rapid growth and Canada's inefficient system of number allocation (there is no number pooling in Canada, so each CLEC is assigned 10,000-number blocks). The number allocation problem was exacerbated by the proliferation of cell phones, pagers and fax machines. However, splitting Toronto between two area codes was not feasible because of the area's high population density and lack of a well-defined boundary along which to split. Additionally, telephone companies wanted to spare their customers the burden of changing their numbers, which would have required the en masse reprogramming of cell phones and fax machines. On 5 March 2001, 416 was overlaid with area code 647, Canada's first overlay code. The implementation of 647 made ten-digit dialing mandatory in Toronto. The successful implementation of 647 made overlays standard in Canada for future relief, even in large rural areas.

Within a decade, 647 was close to exhaustion. The new area code 437 was overlaid for Toronto, and commenced operation on March 25, 2013.[1][2] Area code 387 has been reserved for future use as Toronto's fourth area code.[1]

The incumbent local exchange carrier in the 416/647/437 territory is Bell Canada.

Local calling area[edit]

Demand for 416 numbers for mobile, foreign exchange and voice-over-IP service in the "905 suburbs" (Peel, Durham and York regions) has made the numbers valuable as their local calling area is a superset of that of a suburban number. For instance, Markham, Ontario voice-over-IP provider vBuzzer uses +1-416 numbers to avoid becoming long-distance to Peel Region.

As of 2013, the following points in area code 905 are a local call to +1-416 Toronto: Ajax-Pickering, Aurora, Beeton, Bethesda, Bolton, Brampton, Caledon East, Campbellville, Castlemore, Claremont, Clarkson, Cooksville, Georgetown, Gormley, King City, Kleinburg, Malton, Maple, Markham, Milton, Nobleton, Oak Ridges, Oakville, Palgrave, Port Credit, Richmond Hill, Schomberg, Snelgrove, South Pickering, Stouffville, Streetsville, Thornhill, Tottenham, Unionville, Uxbridge, Victoria and Woodbridge. Caledon in area code 519 is also a local call to Toronto. [3] Many of these suburban areas are long-distance to each other.

416 in popular culture[edit]

Toronto, Ontario

In the Greater Toronto Area, to be a 416er means that one resides in Toronto itself (before 1998, Metro Toronto) while 905ers live in the suburbs outside of the City of Toronto boundaries. The term the 416 is also used to describe the area within Toronto proper, while the suburbs are referred to as the 905 or the 905 belt (in this use the term does not include the more distant parts of area code 905, such as Niagara Falls).

Toronto rapper Maestro rendered homage to the area code in his 1998 song "416/905 (TO Party Anthem)". Rapper Aubrey Drake Graham, also known as Drake, has a tattoo of the number on his rib to symbolize his Toronto birthplace.[4] Drake has also announced that his fourth album will be titled "Views from the 6", referring to the 416 area code.[5]

In The Munsters episode "A Visit from Johann", the Happy Valley Lodge is said to be in the 416 area code.[6] The hamlet of Happy Valley exists, and is part of King Township, which was part of the 416 area code at the time, but is now a part of the 905 area code.

NOTE: All central office codes reside within the rate centre of Toronto. In some cases, 416 prefixes are available to wire centres outside Toronto city limits which serve Toronto subscribers (such as MALTON22 in Mississauga, which serves an airport hotel strip in Toronto).
