Arizona State University at the West Campus is one of four university campuses that compose Arizona State University. The West campus was established by the Arizona Legislature in 1984, and is located in northwest Phoenix, bordering the city of Glendale, Arizona.
Unlike a university system, the ASU campuses are all part of a single university, with a common administration presiding over the faculty, staff, and students.[8] As the original ASU campus in Tempe has nearly reached build-out, the university is reorganizing its colleges and schools, moving some to the newer campuses. As of fall 2008, the West campus enrolls 9,572 students.[9]
In 2008, the West campus was designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride,[10] and in 2009, construction began on a large solar array that will power nearly the entire campus with solar power.[11]

[edit] Academics
The West campus focuses on liberal arts and interdisciplinary programs.[8] In addition, the campus administers all teacher education programs across the university. The campus is home to nearly 9,000 students and offers 54 degree programs leading to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.[12][13]
The West campus comprises the following schools and colleges:[14]
[edit] New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences
The New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences is the only college housed solely on the ASU West campus. The college resembles a traditional liberal arts college, but with an interdisciplinary focus, in which faculty are grouped into broad divisions rather than individual discipline-specific departments.[15] As of the 2007-2008 academic year, the New College is home to over 1900 students[16], 118 faculty[17] and houses 21 degree programs leading to Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the liberal arts and sciences..
[edit] College of Teacher Education and Leadership
The ASU College of Teacher Education and Leadership, offers programs leading to the B.A., M.Ed., and Ed.D. in many fields, such as early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, special education, and educational administration/supervision. In 2009, the College of Teacher Education and Leadership was expanded to administer teacher education programs across all four campuses of the university.[18] making it among the largest higher education teacher preparation programs in the United States.
[edit] W.P. Carey School of Business
Headquartered on the Tempe campus, the W. P. Carey School of Business offers several bachelors degree and M.B.A. programs.
[edit] History
Construction of what is now known as the West Campus began in 1986, with the first permanent buildings completed by 1989. Two years later, all of the current buildings were completed.
As its inception, the West campus was designed to offer only upper-level undergraduate courses (with lower-level courses to be taken at nearby Glendale Community College); however, in 2001, it became a four-year college allowing students to complete their entire education on the campus. In the years since 2001, the academic structure of the campus was reorganized to highlight its interdisciplinary focus, and to facilitate the moving of several graduate programs to the campus.[19] As enrollment continues to grow, additional academic buildings and private developments are scheduled to expand the physical campus.[13]
[edit] Residence Halls
- Las Casas residence hall provides ASU West students with an opportunity to live on campus. Located on the west side of the campus, the residence hall includes a swimming pool, computer lab, and volleyball court.[20]
