Highway 549 is the temporary designation of Future Interstate 49 southeast of Texarkana. Designated a distance of 29.49 miles (47.46 km), Highway 549 first opened to traffic in December 2004 between Texarkana and Fouke. A second section, between Fouke, and Doddridge, opened October 21, 2005. A fourth section, between Arkansas Street in Texarkana and U.S. Highway 71 north of Texarkana opened May 15, 2013.
Its current northern terminus is at U.S. Highway 71 north of the Texarkana city limit at the border with Texas, roughly 5 miles (8.0 km) past the Interstate 30 junction. Its southern terminus is currently at U.S. Highway 71 4.32 miles (6.95 km) north of the Louisiana state line near Doddridge. Construction to complete the road between US 71 and the state line began in 2010 and is expected to be complete in Spring of 2014.
