[edit] Route description
The route enters Arkansas from Missouri as Missouri Route 59 and heads south to Sulphur Springs, where it meets AR 72. Continuing south, Highway 59 meets AR 72 in Gravette, AR 102 in Decatur and AR 12 in Gentry around Smith Field. After Gentry, AR 59 is concurrent with AR 264. After this, the route continues to Siloam Springs, where it meets US 412 and AR 68. South of Siloam Springs the route meets US 62 and meets AR 220 in Cedarville. Figure Five brings a junction with AR 348. Entering Van Buren, AR 59 crosses I-40, then US 64/US 71. Exiting Van Buren, the route crosses Interstate 540/US 71. AR 59 then becomes Levee Road and crosses the Arkansas River, past Fort Chaffee entering Barling, where the route terminates.
[edit] History
From Highway 72 at Gravette, north to the Missouri State Line, AR 59 is the original alignment of U.S. Highway 71. The road continues north into Missouri as Route 59.
Between Siloam Springs and Summers AR 59 is the original alignment of U.S. Highway 59. When US 59 was rerouted through Oklahoma, this road was redesignated AR 59.[citation needed]
The route was widened by the AHTD in 2007 around Siloam Springs.[1]
