The 5 arrondissements of the Saône-et-Loire department are:

  1. Arrondissement of Autun, (subprefecture: Autun) with 11 cantons and 83 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 101,093 in 1990, and was 94,988 in 1999, a decrease of 6.04%.
  2. Arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône, (subprefecture: Chalon-sur-Saône) with 15 cantons and 151 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 193,573 in 1990, and was 193,091 in 1999, a decrease of 0.25%.
  3. Arrondissement of Charolles, (subprefecture: Charolles) with 13 cantons and 136 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 109,134 in 1990, and was 102,205 in 1999, a decrease of 6.35%.
  4. Arrondissement of Louhans, (subprefecture: Louhans) with 8 cantons and 79 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 49,381 in 1990, and was 48,520 in 1999, a decrease of 1.74%.
  5. Arrondissement of Mâcon, (prefecture of the Saône-et-Loire department: Mâcon) with 10 cantons and 124 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 106,232 in 1990, and was 106,089 in 1999, a decrease of 0.13%.
