[edit] Service
The station is served by four trains per hour most of the time, with additional trains at peak hours (with trains running up to five minutes apart).[1] Originally, not all trains on the North Shore Line stopped at Artarmon, with some "fast" trains skipping from Chatswood directly to St Leonards and then on to North Sydney. In the 2009 timetable, most trains stop at Artarmon except for three morning peak services. An average of 8660 passengers use the station each weekday making it the 48th busiest station on the network.[2]
[edit] Station layout
The rail line cuts through the middle of Artarmon, with only limited road access between the two sides. Access to Artarmon station is provided by a pedestrian tunnel with its west entrance situated slightly north of the intersection of Hampden Road and Broughton Road and its east entrance at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Tindale Road.
The platform is raised approximately two metres above street level due to the slope of land near the station. Two pedestrian tunnels cross under the rail line, with access to the station available via stairs from the larger tunnel (marked with CityRail signage). The limited width of the station means that there are no automatic ticket barriers. Passengers must walk to the ticket machines and ticket counter in the middle of the platform to purchase a ticket. Artarmon has one island platform with two tracks and is not an Easy Access station as there is only a staircase leading to the platform; passengers requiring accessible services may use the next stations north and south: Chatswood and St Leonards, respectively.
[edit] Previous services
In the May 2006 timetable change, frequency at Artarmon station was increased from four trains an hour to six to eight trains an hour, in the off peak and on weekends due to redevelopment works at North Sydney station, so it makes it six to eight trains per four between Milsons Point station and Lindfield station and four to six trains per four between Killara station and Gordon station. In the October 2009 timetable change, stations in the Ku-ring-gai region have had significant service cuts, as outbound services are diverted to the Northern Line at Chatswood. Artarmon station has had a cut in weekday services by 17.3%, reflected in a reduced frequency of six trains per hour in each direction during off peak hours.
