[edit] Family

Artemis Fowl I is the patriarch of a famous Irish family featured in the Artemis Fowl series. He is the first of their members who attempts to turn the family's efforts completely legitimate. [1]

[edit] Disappearance

Some time before the start of the first book, he decides to turn all of the family's businesses legitimate. Soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, he attempts to strike a trade deal with Russia. He takes the family ship, the Fowl Star, loaded with 250 thousand cans of cola, from his home in Ireland to Russia. When he passes the Gulf of Kola in the Murmansk Peninsula, Russia, however, the Russian Mafiya destroy the ship with a stolen missile and take Artemis Fowl I into captivity. When the Mafiya find him after the explosion, his leg is missing.[1][2] In the explosion, Domovoi Butler, Artemis Fowl II's bodyguard, lost his uncle, the Major.

[edit] Aftermath

After several years of absence, the courts declare him dead. This causes his wife Angeline Fowl to descend into insanity. The fact that the family lost much money over his death motivated his son Artemis Fowl II to take on the exploits that occur in the first book. [1] He is found and reunited with his family in the second book. [3]
