The Atchison and Nebraska City Railroad was chartered May 5, 1867. The charter authorized the railroad to be built from Atchison, Kansas, to some point on the Nebraska/Kansas border, not further West than 25 miles (40 km) from the Missouri River. When the company was formally organized, the name was changed to the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad.
